SHEIN, the world's leading fashion and lifestyle online retailer , recently announced a partnership with Queen of Raw, an American sustainable fashion company, to purchase excess inventory fabrics from other clothing brands for reuse, reduce the use of raw materials and new fabric consumption, and strive to achieve a fully circular vision by 2050.
In this collaboration, SHEIN uses the patented software Materia MX developed by Queen of Raw to find the backlog of fabrics from other clothing brands as raw materials for production, avoiding them from becoming textile waste and entering landfills. Driven by this innovative model, SHEIN has traced back millions of yards of unused second-hand fabrics that meet procurement standards, making it possible to reduce the waste of raw materials in future production.
"We are excited about the prospects of this collaboration," said Stephanie Benedetto, CEO of Queen of Raw. "SHEIN's small-order, quick-response model and agile supply chain system, combined with the reuse of overstocked clothing fabrics , is undoubtedly an effective waste reduction strategy. Combining SHEIN's supply-demand matching production model with our blockchain traceability technology can unleash powerful innovation in the entire chain from sourcing to design and efficient production." According to Queen of Raw, about $120 billion worth of unused idle fabrics in the fashion industry are incinerated or buried as industrial waste each year. If more than 1 million yards of inventory fabrics can be used as a production source, SHEIN will become a global leader in the field of recycling.
This collaboration is also part of SHEIN's commitment to the 2022 World Circular Textile Day initiative, which calls for a fully circular vision in all textile industries by 2050. "The collaboration with Queen of Raw promotes the construction of a circular ecosystem for SHEIN's entire life cycle," said Caitrin Watson, Director of Sustainability at SHEIN. "Because we follow an on-demand production model, SHEIN does not produce a lot of excess fabrics like other traditional clothing companies. This also gives us the opportunity to purchase surplus raw materials for production, reducing environmental impact, and thus providing a reference for other companies' circular economy strategies. "
This cooperation is part of SHEIN's recently launched evoluSHEIN sustainable development strategy. The evoluSHEIN strategy focuses on three core paths: equal empowerment, collective resilience and waste reduction innovation, including sustainable practices such as environmentally friendly procurement, carbon emission reduction, efficient use of energy, and creating a recyclable ecology, focusing on solving common challenges and issues facing the fashion industry, thereby continuing to lead the company's sustainable development path.
