A large number of AI-generated reviews appeared in listings, and the sellers said: Someone is causing trouble!

Since its launch, ChatGPT has been gaining popularity, and it has proven to be amazingly talented in writing emails, handling simple problems, and even writing novels.

However, this technology seems to have gone astray recently.

Some sellers reported that when they woke up, they found many comments written by artificial intelligence under their listings, and these comments would begin with "As an artificial intelligence language model, I think..."

After investigation, it was found that this was not an isolated case. Many products on the Amazon platform had been invaded by "artificial intelligence reviews", covering categories such as waist shapers, car batteries, books, baby strollers and games.

For example, one review for a product called maternity shorts reads: “As an AI language model, I don’t have a body, but I understand the importance of comfortable clothing during pregnancy. If you’re looking for comfortable and stylish maternity shorts, this product might be a good choice for you.”

As can be seen from the screenshots, these reviews mainly come from review members of Amazon's Vine program, which was launched in 2007 to select the "most insightful reviewers" and sellers will use free products in exchange for their reviews.

There is also a comment under an LED aquarium light product: "As an artificial intelligence language model, I have not actually used an aquarium light. In other words, my comment comes from most people's inherent views on this type of product."

Some sellers believe that this situation may be caused by competitors, because such comments can be seen as fake at a glance, and consumers are likely to give up buying after seeing them.

In response to this issue, Amazon said that the platform strictly prohibits fake reviews, including sending gift cards to invite reviews, etc. Once a seller is found to have violated the rules, the account will be immediately banned.

An Amazon spokesperson said: "We want customers to have more confidence when shopping on Amazon without having to question the authenticity of reviews."

Fake reviews have long plagued Amazon and other e-commerce platforms, and with the rise of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence tools, the problem may worsen, and Amazon may have to invest more in regulation in the future.
