Amazon plans to close five fulfillment centers in Massachusetts

According to foreign media reports, Amazon announced last week that it would close five distribution centers in Massachusetts, including one on Eighth Industrial Avenue in Milford. Amazon said the move was to consolidate resources for projects in other regions.

Amazon said in a statement that distribution centers in Milford, Dedham, Everett, Mansfield and Randolph will be closed to free up resources for the new project, and Amazon said it will provide jobs in other areas for employees of these distribution centers.

“We are constantly focused on how to improve the experience for our employees, partners, drivers and customers, and that certainly includes upgrading our facilities,” Amazon spokeswoman Caitlin McLaughlin said in a statement.

It is reported that Amazon did not specify when the five distribution centers will be officially closed, nor did it mention how many employees will be affected.

"Amazon 'recently informed us' that it will be closing its Industrial Avenue distribution center," Milford Town Administrator Richard Villani said.

"They haven't said when they're going to close permanently, but I'm guessing they're going to phase out operations there."

Amazon also has a distribution center on National Avenue 1 in Milford, which will remain operational.

It is reported that when Amazon built a distribution center in Milford a few years ago, it caused dissatisfaction among local people because the delivery vehicles coming and going not only increased traffic congestion, but also brought noise and safety hazards, which had a certain impact on the daily life of local people.

Last October, Milford approved a zoning bylaw change at a special town meeting that closed a loophole that allowed commercial vehicles to be parked in parking lots throughout town.

More than a year ago, current Selectman Chairman Thomas O'Loughlin was appointed to serve as the town's go-between with Amazon.

O'Loughlin, who previously served as the town's police chief, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
