As European and American consumers’ mentality changes, e-commerce sellers need to pay more attention to product sustainability

It is understood that nearly 30% of European and American consumers are "highly involved" in creating Sustainable lifestyles are translating into their purchasing habits, with 67% of consumers checking a brand’s sustainability before buying it. In addition, 73% of global consumers also say they would change their consumption habits to reduce their impact on the environment.

At the same time, consumers' concerns about the environment are also affecting their purchasing behavior, so e-commerce sellers are also in urgent need of adapting to this change in consumers' mentality to obtain more orders. In addition to the sustainability of the product itself, e-commerce sellers can also win the favor of consumers through the following two aspects.

First, e-commerce sellers can develop more sustainable development strategies through packaging . Data shows that in 2019 , the global e-commerce industry used approximately 2.1 billion pounds of plastic packaging, with the top three countries using the most being the United States, China, and the United Kingdom .

What is more worrying is that in order to ensure that the products are transported intact, many e-commerce sellers will use excessive packaging. It is understood that in 2019, e-commerce used 10 times more packaging than physical stores. At present, it seems that some e-commerce companies have begun to adopt more environmentally friendly options, such as using recyclable bags or reducing the size of packages.

Secondly, by providing consumers with sustainable delivery, it will also increase their recognition and repurchase rate of brands and products. For example, in the UK, 27% of green gas emissions are caused by transportation. But in the past few years, environmental technologies such as drones and delivery robots have been touted as future solutions for the "last mile" delivery of e-commerce packages.

Due to the impact of the epidemic, e-commerce business has grown dramatically in the past two years, and e-commerce delivery volume is expected to increase by 78% by 2030. Therefore, e-commerce sellers need to show consumers how their products and services have become more sustainable in order to seek more orders.
