In the post-epidemic era, Americans' work and social activities began to return to normal, and the demand for clothing and footwear products also changed.
According to the latest research data from NPD Group, sales of women's dresses in the United States increased 42% from January to May 2022 , an increase of 14% compared to 2019 before the pandemic .
According to CivicScience survey data , 14 % of American consumers plan to attend a wedding this summer , so more and more people are starting to buy dresses for special occasions.
In men's clothing, sportswear sales increased by 32% compared with last year, returning to the level of 2019. However, sales of suits have not yet recovered because American consumers tend to buy clothes that can be worn on multiple occasions and mixed and matched .
As more consumers begin to return to in-person events such as parties , gatherings, weddings, etc., party shoes have become popular .
Beth Goldstein, fashion footwear and accessories analyst at NPD , said styles are shifting away from pumps — a more conservative, work-oriented style — toward more occasion-focused open-toed sandals.
NPD found through studying the sales data of the footwear market from January to May 2022 that with the return of offline parties , the market share of high heels has surpassed that of low heels. This means that the current fashion trend in the United States has changed and is no longer the mainstream sports and comfortable style.
It is worth noting that the men's shoe market has also changed during the same period . The market share of hybrid shoes that combine sports shoes with formal shoes is steadily increasing, accounting for one-third of the total market share, significantly higher than 20% in 2019 .
Goldstein said that men's formal shoes are showing a strong recovery trend and have become the fastest growing area in the men's market.
As more Americans return to work and social events, consumers are shifting away from athletic comfort shopping and toward sophisticated footwear and apparel.
Strong demand for dresses, men's tailored clothing, contemporary clothing for men and women, and luggage drove sales at Bloomingdale's, a unit of Macy's, up 26.9 percent in the first quarter.
Hot-selling categories during the pandemic have shifted from casual, activewear, home and soft textiles to dresses, men’s suits, shoes, fragrances, beauty and luggage.
NPD also found that sales of women's bags suitable for evening wear grew very rapidly from January to May 2022 compared to last year , and sales of related products have now returned to 2019 levels.
The demand for attending public occasions has driven sales of related products . Data shows that handbag sales in the US market have increased by nearly 80%, shoes have increased by 60% , and boutique clothing has increased by more than 30%.
As the epidemic control is relaxed, Americans return to offline social activities, and consumer demand has changed greatly compared to before. Therefore, when selecting products, sellers in the US market must adapt to the current market demand and focus on the layout of related categories. US e-commerce market Hot selling trend |
