Starting May 1, USPS will delay the delivery of some packages by 1-2 days

Recently, the United States Postal Service (USPS) announced that starting from May 1, it will slow down the delivery speed of its First Class Package Service , and the package delivery time is expected to be extended by 1-2 days .

Currently, the delivery time for USPS first-class packages is generally 2-3 days . Starting May 1, this ratio will change to only 68%, of which 17% of first-class packages will take 4 days and 15% of first-class packages will take 5 days.

It is reported that this change is part of the 10-year strategy of U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to stabilize postal finances. In order to reverse the agency's long-term financial losses , he had to implement this plan to achieve cost savings.

Not only that, last year USPS has extended the delivery time of about 40% of first-class packages .

USPS said that its current standard of delivering about 80% of first-class packages within three days is unrealistic and difficult to implement. In the future, USPS will reduce its reliance on air transportation and use trucks instead of airplanes to transport more packages. USPS believes that this mode of transportation will help improve on-time delivery rates while reducing shipping costs for senders. After the new delivery standards are implemented, USPS can save $42 million in costs each year.

Although some first-class packages will take longer to arrive, the percentage of packages delivered within two days will increase by 4% .

Among them, most of the medicine packages delivered within two days will not be affected, while among the medicine packages originally planned to be delivered within three days , the delivery time of 16% of the packages will be extended to 4-5 days .

Of course, to avoid delays, USPS also offers customers more expensive options, namely Priority Mail Express or regular Priority Mail, which only takes 1-3 days to deliver packages to anywhere in the continental United States.

Due to the pandemic and cost-cutting operational changes, USPS delivery has been slowing down. This has had a certain impact on sellers who rely on USPS. Delivery delays are bound to lead to a decrease in sellers' online sales and an increase in return rates and complaints.

The editor believes that sellers can consider adding UPS or FedEx as a paid shipping service option to the listing or online store, and add a note explaining the possible problems with the USPS standard delivery option, and recommending that buyers pay for one of the courier services to ensure that they can receive the goods on time.
