The United States may pass a new bill that will prevent Amazon from manipulating search rankings?

According to foreign media reports, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee recently passed two new antitrust bills (the American Online Innovation and Choice Act and the Open App Marketplace Act) with an overwhelming majority . These two bills will prohibit large technology platforms from favoring their own products and services .

It is understood that the Open App Market Act mainly affects companies that are limited to operating app stores, such as Apple and Google . The American Online Innovation and Choice Act has a wider impact and may prevent companies like Amazon from providing better search rankings for their own-brand products than third-party sellers .

The American Online Innovation and Choice Act passed the Senate Judiciary Committee by a vote of 16 to 6 and was sent to the full Senate for deliberation. If the bill is passed, it will bring major changes to the industry. Amazon's third-party sellers generally believe that Amazon has manipulated search rankings.

The big tech companies had expressed opposition to both bills before the Senate Judiciary Committee passed them.

Amazon, Apple and Google all expressed concerns about the bills in letters or blogs to the committee on Tuesday. Apple and Google worry that the bills would expose consumers to malware, ransomware and scams by allowing users to download unreviewed apps .

Both Google and Amazon have stressed that the bill could have a negative impact on consumers and small businesses that rely on their services. For example, Amazon's vice president of public policy said in a statement that the legislation could jeopardize the company's ability to provide Prime shipping services to sellers . "It would make it difficult for us to guarantee that small businesses can ship their products within one or two days. "

At the same time, some small business owners who support the bill are also worried that the deep pockets and extensive lobbying efforts of tech giants will weaken the final bill. One small business owner said: "Big tech companies have a huge influence on legislators with their deep pockets and extensive lobbying efforts, and even if the bills themselves are well- intentioned , they will be destroyed before they are actually passed into law ."
