Shopify added approximately 2.6 million stores, an increase of 200%

Since the outbreak of the epidemic, offline consumption has been suppressed, and consumers have gradually shifted their shopping to e-commerce, ushering in a period of vigorous development for global e-commerce. Under this trend, the number of online sellers has experienced explosive growth, which is not only reflected in the increase in the number of third-party sellers on Amazon, but also in the number of sellers on the independent website Shopify .

Research by Genus AI shows that the number of stores on Shopify grew by 201.53% between March 2020 and January 2022 , with approximately 2.6 million new online stores added in less than two years .

This strong growth can be attributed to the coronavirus measures implemented in most countries, such as lockdowns , which forced sellers to find alternative ways to increase revenue as physical stores had to close .

Most of Shopify's sellers are based in the U.S. As of January 2022, the platform had 2.67 million online stores from the U.S. , an increase of 178.53% from approximately 960,000 in March 2020 .

In addition, the number of online stores from Europe on Shopify has also increased significantly . Currently, there are about 156,000 online stores on Shopify in the UK , an increase of 218.81 % . France follows closely with about 60,000 stores , an increase of 320.85%.

Among these European countries, the number of sellers in Germany increased the most, reaching 480.18%. There are currently about 79,000 stores operating on Shopify Germany , a number that was only about 14,000 in March 2020 .

According to Genus AI, most of the newly added stores on Shopify consist of smaller sellers who are not able to compete with e-commerce giants such as Amazon and focus on customer satisfaction, security and user-friendly websites to receive higher ratings.

Amazon has always had strict policy requirements. Coupled with this year's account suspension wave and rule changes, some sellers have begun to pay attention to multi-platform layout, and independent sites have also become a consideration for many sellers. During the Black Friday and Cyber Monday period not long ago, Shopify's sales also set a historical record, which shows the growth rate of the platform.

The Shopify and Amazon models each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Sellers should make appropriate judgments based on their own circumstances when making their plans.
