Want to challenge Amazon? JD.com enters the European market

According to CNBC , JD.com is entering the European market.

JD.com has reportedly opened two retail stores in the Netherlands that will be equipped with robots to prepare and sort orders .

The two "robot stores" called Ochama are located in Leiden and Rotterdam, marking JD.com's first physical stores in Europe. CNBC commented: " It highlights the Chinese giant's ambition to expand outside of China. "

JD.com said shoppers can use the Ochama app to order a variety of products, including food , beauty and household items , and then they can go to the store to pick up their orders. In-store robots will automatically pick up the products and sort the orders. When shoppers arrive at the store, they can pick up their orders by using the barcode on the app .

In addition to in-store pickup, consumers can also choose next-day delivery or door-to-door delivery when paying for their order, rather than picking up the goods in person.

CNBC believes that JD.com's entry into Europe marks the beginning of a potential challenge for Amazon. It is understood that Amazon has launched its own unmanned grocery store Amazon Go in the United States and Amazon Fresh in the United Kingdom. JD.com said it plans to open two more stores in Amsterdam and Utrecht in the Netherlands.

CNBC said that the Ochama store combines JD.com's advantages in logistics and e-commerce.

While JD.com still generates most of its revenue in China, it has also been expanding its overseas presence in recent years , where it operates an online shopping site called Joybuy.com, has an e-commerce joint venture in Thailand called JD Central, and is the largest shareholder in Vietnamese shopping platform Tiki.

In an interview in November 2021 , Xin Lijun, the newly appointed CEO of JD.com's retail business, told CNBC that JD.com was "conducting further strategic analysis in Vietnam and Europe" as potential expansion locations. JD.com's settlement in Europe also confirms this statement.

There have been rumors that JD.com is looking for excellent Amazon stores and may acquire them later, but this has not been confirmed yet.
