Some consumers in the United States are considering postponing some holiday shopping until early 2022.
According to a survey by Pitney Bowes, a global shipping and mailing company , about half of U.S. consumers ( 51%) are considering waiting until January or February to buy items they originally planned to buy during the holidays . The survey found that due to supply chain and fewer discounts, consumers hope to enjoy more abundant supplies and greater discounts after the holidays.
The most popular product category is electronics, with 30% of consumers hoping to buy electronics after the holidays , likely due to current inventory and chip shortages and low discounts. Clothing follows closely behind, with 21% of consumers saying they will wait until the New Year to buy.
“We’re seeing shoppers closely monitoring news about inventory and supply chains and tempering their expectations accordingly,” said Pitney Bowes vice president of product management, Steve Jobs.
The survey found that among younger generations, the proportion of consumers postponing purchases has increased, with about two-thirds of Generation Z and Millennials insisting on making purchases in 2022.
Two-thirds ( 68%) of consumers found many items out of stock this holiday season, and nearly half (45%) said they did not see the deals they expected early in the holiday season; 43% said they would hold off on making purchases during the holiday season to wait for bigger deals .
More than two-thirds ( 69%) of consumers expect supply chain issues to continue until early next year, and 62% expect supply chain issues to continue until the end of next year.
However, this year half of American consumers still plan to buy holiday gifts during the traditional peak season. Pitney Bowes also surveyed consumers about their expectations for delivery time, especially the importance of paying attention to the estimated delivery date when purchasing holiday gifts.
Three quarters ( 76%) of shoppers say they would contact customer service if their online order was not delivered by the promised date, but that percentage would be halved if the seller updated the estimated delivery date in the order tracking message.
In situations where a seller provides an updated delivery date, more than half of Millennials say they would recommend that seller to friends and family . USA electronic holiday |
