According to eMarketer, by 2025, sales on U.S. fashion online resale platforms will reach $30.63 billion , with an expected annual compound growth rate of 24%, accounting for 10% of all e-commerce clothing and accessories sales.
In recent years , American consumers have shown an increasing interest in shopping at thrift stores , especially among some consumers who like to buy products with a higher cost performance and Generation Z shoppers . In addition, driven by social media, people's perception of buying and wearing second-hand clothes has developed to the point of being cool and avant-garde.
Data shows this new interest in thrifting is spreading to e-commerce , and the number of resale sites dedicated to selling secondhand clothing has increased over the past five years.
In addition to small brands, big clothing brands and retailers, such as Patagonia, REI and Eileen Fisher, have also begun to enter the second-hand market, selling second-hand goods of their own brands on independent websites.
However, as the size of the second-hand market continues to expand, inventory issues may inhibit the growth of online resale clothing. Because the size, price, quality, etc. of second-hand clothing purchased online are quite different from the actual condition. In addition, as more and more merchants enter this field, finding reliable sellers or second-hand inventory supply is also a challenge. At the same time, the supply chain congestion crisis during this peak season has prevented many buyers from purchasing their favorite products, so many American consumers have begun to turn to second-hand goods. According to most second-hand buyers, second-hand goods are a good alternative when new products are in short supply, because they can be obtained quickly and are more cost-effective.
Relevant data shows that the number of consumers in the United States willing to accept second-hand gifts is also increasing. 66% of consumers are now willing to accept second-hand gifts ; and 62% of consumers believe that buying second-hand clothing/fashion gifts is more socially acceptable now than five years ago.
The increase in the size of the second-hand market also indicates a change in consumer consumption behavior. For cross-border sellers, in addition to low prices, increasing the cost-effectiveness or other value attributes of products will also make the products more in line with consumer needs.
