Sales of non-alcoholic beer and imported beer in Russia have increased significantly

Recently, the research company NielsenIQ summarized the sales of the Russian beer market during the peak season this year . The results show that the sales of non-alcoholic beer and imported beer in Russia have increased significantly.

From January to the end of August this year , the sales volume of the Russian beer market increased by 2% compared with the same period in 2020. According to preliminary estimates, the total volume of alcoholic products sold reached 3.4 billion liters. In the peak beer sales season from June to August alone, the total volume of alcoholic products sold reached 1.5 billion liters.

Research shows that Russian consumers are experiencing a drop in demand for their usual popular alcoholic beverages. According to NielsenIQ, Russian vodka sales fell 2.5% between January and August 2021 , while sparkling wine sales fell 11%.

Currently , non-alcoholic beer and imported beer have become the main drivers of the Russian beer market . With the increasing popularity of online retail, sales of non-alcoholic beer are growing in Russia , with sales in this segment increasing by 13.2% compared to the same period in 2020, and its share of the alcohol market currently stands at 2.4%.

At the same time, sales of imported beer are also growing, and its share of the Russian alcohol market has increased by 1.2% and is now as high as 5.5%. Although imported beer is the most expensive among beer products, it is still loved by the majority of Russian consumers . As of August 2021, the average cost of a liter of imported beer was 178 rubles . Compared with the same period in 2020, sales of imported beer increased by 30.3%.

Experts in the beer market believe that the main reason for the growth of the Russian beer market this year is the stimulation of the hot summer. In the summer of 2021, Russia saw a series of high temperature records, which had a positive impact on sales during the peak season. In addition, the reasons for the growth also include the introduction of the QR code system in Moscow during the peak season and the holding of the European Football Championship in St. Petersburg .

However, some experts in the alcohol market believe that it is too early to talk about the overall sales results of the beer market this year. Andrei Gubka, head of the Beer Producers Association, said : "The hot summer boosted sales during the peak season, but there are many factors that affect the industry 's performance , such as the increase in consumption taxes in recent years . For now, we expect the beer market in 2021 to remain roughly at the level of 2020. "
