September 23, 2021, Beijing - Amazon and Global Optimism recently announced that more than 200 companies around the world have signed The Climate Pledge , working together to achieve net zero carbon emissions in order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement ahead of schedule. The 86 new signatories include Procter & Gamble, HP, Salesforce, ASOS, Nespresso , etc. The signatories of The Climate Pledge have a combined annual global revenue of more than $1.8 trillion, with employees in 21 countries, across 26 industries, and a total of more than 7 million people. Together, these signatories demonstrate the collective influence of The Climate Pledge in addressing climate change and promoting climate action.
Companies that sign up to The Climate Pledge agree to : ● Regularly measure and report greenhouse gas emissions. ● Achieve the carbon reduction strategies of the Paris Agreement through practical business changes and innovative initiatives, including strategies to improve efficiency, promote renewable energy development, reduce materials and other carbon emission elimination. ● Neutralize remaining carbon emissions through additional quantifiable, tangible, permanent and socially beneficial offsets. “I believe today, more than ever, companies like Amazon have an obligation to act for our planet,” said Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. “But solving this challenge requires more than one company alone. It requires all of us acting together. We are excited to announce that more than 200 companies have signed The Climate Pledge, joining us in our commitment to meet the Paris Agreement goals ahead of schedule.”
Many signatories of the Climate Declaration have made significant progress in carbon reduction. As one of the world's largest corporate purchasers of renewable energy, Amazon has built 232 projects around the world . At the 2021 China International Fair for Trade in Services , Amazon Web Services announced that the second renewable energy project supported by Amazon in China will be put into operation in 2023, and is expected to provide more than 300,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable energy per year, equivalent to providing electricity support for more than 150,000 ordinary Chinese households. In 2020, Amazon released its first renewable energy project supported in China, a 100 megawatt (MW) solar project in Shandong, which is generating 128,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy each year.
Since 2010, P&G has reduced absolute emissions from its global operations by 52%. The company has also increased its renewable energy electricity procurement by 97% and has created 15 million tons of carbon reduction benefits through cold water washing by working with consumers to create simple and easy sustainable home living with laundry products such as Tide and Ariel. David S. Taylor, Chairman, President and CEO of P&G, said: "An effective response to climate change requires collaboration across all industries and concrete actions based on science. P&G has made significant progress in this regard over the past decade, but we know there is still work to do in the future. The task ahead of us is urgent and daunting, and no company can tackle it alone. P&G is honored to join The Climate Pledge and work with everyone to protect our common home for future generations. "
“The climate crisis is imminent and we must take aggressive action to protect our planet, and The Climate Pledge is an important step in that direction,” said Enrique Lores , president and CEO of HP Inc. “ As a technology company, HP has committed to the most comprehensive and aggressive climate action in the industry, and we are implementing these initiatives across our entire portfolio of products and services, our businesses, and our broader value chain to maximize our impact and achieve win-win development for business growth and sustainability. ”
Businesses have long contributed to climate change , but rising temperatures can be stabilized if their greenhouse gas emissions are drastically reduced. That is why businesses around the world must act urgently and proactively. The 201 signatories to The Climate Pledge can play a unique role in meeting the challenge of climate change and creating a low-carbon future.
Nick Beighton, CEO of ASOS, said: “Climate change is the defining challenge of our time. Businesses must take bold and decisive action, both individually and collectively, to find solutions to the crisis we face today. ASOS is delighted to be joining forces with Amazon, Global Optimism and other signatories to The Climate Pledge, and in doing so, to join the UNFCCC’s Race to Zero . This reinforces our commitment to sustainability by joining a community of businesses that will share knowledge, ideas and best practice to achieve this important mission. ”
Guillaume Le Cunff , CEO of Nestlé’s Nespresso , said : “ Now is the time to act urgently. We are entering a decisive decade – one where we must act to protect the planet not only for future generations, but for the future of humanity. I believe that business can be a powerful catalyst in the fight against climate change if everyone acts together. That’s why we have signed The Climate Pledge, and our net zero commitment is aligned with our carbon neutrality commitment. This commitment will be met through large-scale decarbonisation of our direct emissions and emissions from our global supply chain, coupled with high-quality internal and external offsetting to neutralise the remaining emissions. ” “We are in the midst of a climate crisis. Salesforce believes that business is the best platform to address climate change, and the environment is deeply connected to this. That’s why Salesforce is proud to join The Climate Pledge to accelerate and amplify corporate climate action to drive meaningful change,” said Suzanne BiDianca, Chief Impact Officer at Salesforce. “In the fight to save the planet, every business has an important role to play. With our commitment, Salesforce will do everything in our power to accelerate the world’s largest companies to net zero carbon emissions, create a sustainable future by protecting, restoring, and planting one trillion trees that absorb up to 100 billion tons of carbon, and drive a corporate eco-revolution. ”
The release of this information is in response to the findings of the latest report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which highlights the urgency of responding to the climate crisis. Unless greenhouse gas emissions are reduced immediately, rapidly and on a large scale, it will be impossible to achieve the goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius or even 2 degrees Celsius.
Christiana Figueres, former UN climate change chief and founding partner of Global Optimism, said: “The recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is a stark reminder that climate change is real, it’s happening, and our planet is sounding the alarm. I am encouraged to see 86 new companies join The Climate Pledge, bringing the total to over 200. These companies and organizations agree that responsibility and collaboration are essential to achieving net zero carbon emissions. I am proud of the progress they have made, and I look forward to their leaders joining together to do the difficult but necessary work of building a low-carbon economy and protecting the natural environment.”
