Australian online shopping orders surge: "Every day is like Christmas"

According to foreign media reports, Australia Post needs to recruit nearly 5,000 workers to meet the needs of people in the blockade area. Currently, the company needs to deliver more than 2 million parcels every day.

 

Australia Post said it needed to add 1,600 permanent and fixed-term jobs across the country and a further 3,300 casual jobs before Christmas to cope with a record surge in online shopping orders, as there were vacancies in every state . These included parcel and mail handling, van and truck drivers, motorcycle and EDV postmen, forklift operators and customer service.

 

The recruitment drive is Australia Post's second in less than a month, following its recruitment of 4000 new staff in late August.

 

“It’s like Christmas every day at Australia Post right now and we’re looking for people to join us in delivering and handling record numbers of orders across the country , ” Australia Post executive general manager people and culture Sue Davies said.

 

CouriersPlease is an Australian parcel delivery company specializing in parcel delivery in metropolitan areas .

 

The volume of parcels handled by Couriers Please between March and May 2020 increased by 80% compared to the previous year . After the lockdown ended and restrictions began to be eased, parcel volumes remained stable at 53% higher than in 2019.

 

In the fourth quarter of 2019 , CouriersPlease delivered more than 4.6 million parcels , while in the fourth quarter of 2020 , CouriersPlease handled more than 8 million parcels, an increase of 71%.

 

This year, Couriers Please delivered more than 5.6 million parcels in just eight weeks from June 25, when Sydney went into lockdown , and as a result, the company expects parcel volumes to grow by a further 30 per cent in the fourth quarter of this year compared to the same period last year .

“Since last year, we have rapidly expanded our business, doubling our franchisee network and hiring hundreds of delivery drivers. However, package volumes continue to soar to record levels. We are preparing to increase our business by more than 30% and hire additional warehouse staff and delivery drivers.”
