Amazon announces partnership with U.S. Congress to support small businesses

Although it may face blows from antitrust bills in the U.S. Congress, Amazon recently announced that it will work with Congress to support the development of small and medium-sized enterprises.

Amazon said that in the United States alone, there are more than 500,000 small and medium-sized enterprises selling goods on Amazon. These enterprises drive innovation and create jobs. Amazon is proud to be a part of their success and is committed to their continued growth. Last year, Amazon invested more than $18 billion in logistics, tools, services, programs and personnel to help small and medium-sized businesses succeed.

Amazon stands ready to work with Congress to support small businesses and lower barriers to entry to sell products online in three key ways:

Increase access to capital and training: Small business owners have a harder time getting funding from traditional lending methods. Amazon supports making the Minority Business Development Agency permanent, making the Small Business Administration’s Community Advantage pilot program permanent before it expires in 2022, and increasing resources for Small Business Development Centers, Women’s Business Centers, and Veterans Business Outreach Centers.

Increase Access to Digital Connectivity: Many small businesses struggle to access reliable and affordable broadband. Congress should continue to prioritize the deployment of communications infrastructure and wireless connectivity, especially in rural areas and other underserved communities. Better broadband will make it possible for small businesses to reach a global customer base and grow.

Ensure a stable U.S. Postal Service (USPS): Congress should use the opportunity to pass legislation to reform the postal service to provide stable financial support to the USPS and ensure reliable service. Small businesses, especially those in rural areas, rely on the USPS to connect with their customers. Supporting the USPS will ensure that small businesses can continue to meet critical operational needs.

It is not difficult to see that Amazon mainly supports local American companies this time, which is in sharp contrast to the situation of Chinese sellers.

Due to violations by some sellers, Amazon has launched a large-scale account suspension campaign since April this year, most of which are Chinese sellers. According to a survey by Marketplace Pulse, the market share of Chinese sellers on Amazon has shrunk, with the largest decline on Amazon in the United States.

For a long time, the market share of American sellers on Amazon has been shrinking, and it is understandable that Amazon supports its own sellers. If sellers want to gain a foothold on Amazon, they still need to operate in compliance in order to go long-term.
