When competing brands run into trouble, is this an opportunity for Chinese sellers?

Recently, carcinogens were detected in a well-known Korean brand of instant noodles. Is this an opportunity for Chinese sellers?

Well-known brands were found to have serious excess levels of carcinogens

For domestic consumers, instant noodles are a secondary choice, but it is different in Korea. If you often watch Korean variety shows, you will find that Koreans love instant noodles. Cooking a pot of instant noodles is essential for friends and family gatherings. According to the data, Korea's per capita consumption of instant noodles ranks first in the world. Not only that, export sales are also increasing year by year.

But recently, a batch of a well-known Korean instant noodle brand exported to Europe was found to contain serious excess of carcinogens. The tested batch was sold in Germany, and the EU agency found ethylene oxide in seafood ramen, which is listed as a Class I carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

It is reported that the affected instant noodles were produced on January 27 and March 3 this year , and the concentration of ethylene oxide in them exceeded the EU standard by more than 148 times. As soon as the results came out, the European Commission RASFF immediately ordered a ban on the sale of the product across Europe and implemented a recall.

As soon as the incident happened, it became a hot topic in China, sparking a lot of discussion. However, it is understood that this instant noodle is not exported to China in large quantities, and the imported part is also a Korean version. Due to the different manufacturers, no carcinogens were detected.

Safety is the top priority of food issues. After this incident, the brand has also suffered a certain negative impact in the European market, which may be an opportunity for Chinese sellers.

Market situation of instant noodles

During the lockdown, people were not allowed to go out freely, especially restaurants were closed, and the sales of various foods increased significantly, setting off a "cooking boom" both at home and abroad . Among them, a series of convenient foods made in China have been welcomed worldwide, and quick and simple instant noodles are the representative.

At present, Chinese instant noodles continue to be popular in Africa and Southeast Asia, and some sellers have begun to enter the European and American markets. The sales of a domestic brand in Europe and the United States from January to July this year soared by 64%.

Instant noodles and other fast food products also have a certain market in foreign countries, and the epidemic has further promoted this demand. However, food exports require a series of certifications, and relevant sellers must also be well prepared.
