This children's product was recalled due to excessive chemical content. Sellers of similar products should be vigilant

Watercolor pens are essential painting tools for children. They are very popular among children because of their rich and bright colors. Some watercolor pens even emit a faint fragrance. However, Ireland recently recalled a product called "Children's Scented Colored Markers" due to safety issues, and urged parents to keep their children away from these colored pens.

The brand of product involved in this recall is Primark, which has been sold in major shopping malls since January 15, 2019. Regarding the reason for the recall, the Irish Competition and Consumer Protection Commission stated that during product testing, they found that the benzyl alcohol content in one of the purple colored pens in this product exceeded the standard, so there is a risk of allergies.

It is reported that benzyl alcohol is a fixative, and many businesses will add this substance to watercolor pens. It not only makes the product emit fragrance, but also has certain preservative ingredients to extend the shelf life of the product. However, this additive should not be used in excess, otherwise it is easy to cause allergies.

At present, the safety of children's toy products has become the focus of attention of all countries. In order to supervise the quality of toys, many countries have established strict and complete toy safety regulations and standards.

Searching for "Stamper pens" on the UK Amazon page, you will find that many merchants are selling similar products. Among them, the scented colored pen with the most reviews mentioned in the description that it complies with the European EN71#3#9 standard.

This standard is the guideline set by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) for the safety of children's toys. It clearly stipulates that the benzene content in children's products must not exceed 5 mg/kg.

However, it is worth noting that the quality of watercolor pens produced and sold on the market in my country is uneven, and many of them have excessive benzene content. The main reason is that my country's testing standards for watercolor pens are basically based on the national standard GB21027 "General Safety Requirements for Student Supplies", which only stipulates the limit indicators for heavy metal content, and does not make clear requirements for the content of chemical elements such as benzene.

European and American countries have always attached great importance to children's safety and have strict audits on children's products. Therefore, the editor would like to remind sellers to conduct strict audits when listing such products to ensure that all additives in the products meet the product standards of the EU and the destination country to avoid similar recall incidents.
