The number of shopping app sessions in the United States grew 66% in Q4 2020

Data from market research firm Apptopia shows that in the fourth quarter of 2020, downloads of shopping apps increased by nearly 17% worldwide and 18% in the United States . Many of these downloads were contributed by consumers who made purchases using the app for the first time.

As 2020 progressed, mobile shoppers turned to apps to find the best online deals . Amazon, Target, and Walmart all performed well, with Amazon becoming the top retailer of 2020.

Not only that, installs of the “Buy Now, Pay Later” app soared 136%, and web visits to coupon site CouponXoo increased 742% year-over-year.

Apptopia’s report also showed that the number of sessions for shopping apps in the United States increased by 66% in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to 2019 .

As can be seen from the above figure, in terms of application sessions, China ranked first in 2020 with 29 billion sessions, while in 2019 this figure was 27 billion, and its growth is evident.

It is worth noting that in the United States and Brazil, the number of application sessions has grown even more rapidly . Taking the United States as an example, the number of shopping app sessions was 14 billion in 2019, but it increased by more than 60% in 2020 to 23 billion, second only to China.

In addition, Apptopia’s report also mentioned that Social networks are the main drivers of e-commerce traffic, they bring 30% traffic lift and contribute 2.4% of traffic .

Among them, 40.2% of social media traffic for e-commerce brands comes from Facebook, YouTube accounts for 30.5%, followed by Instagram (3.2%), Twitter (10.1%), Pinterest (5%) and Reddit (5%).

It is not difficult to find from the above data that during the epidemic, the increase in time consumers spend on mobile devices has greatly promoted the download and use of shopping applications. App Annie's report also confirms this well. According to the data, global consumers spent 82 billion hours on shopping apps in 2020, an increase of 30% from 2019 .

Shopping apps are popular among consumers, which once again makes sellers realize that mobile devices have become an important channel for consumers to participate in marketing activities. Sellers should also pay more attention to marketing through this channel.
