Amazon continues to expand its distribution center, investing in Louisiana three times in July

According to foreign media reports, Amazon plans to open a new robotic distribution center in Louisiana, which will also be Amazon’s second robotic distribution center in the state.

It is understood that the distribution center opened in Baton Rouge covers an area of 820,000 square feet (more than 76,000 square meters), which will bring more than 1,000 jobs and US$200 million in capital investment to Baton Rouge.

The Louisiana governor's office said Baton Rouge was chosen as the site for Amazon's new fulfillment center because it will help them achieve their goal of fast delivery to customers in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. The center will include modern robotics, inventory and shipping operations.

At the new fulfillment center, Amazon employees will use the latest robotics technology to pick, pack and ship smaller customer orders such as books, toys, electronics and other household items.

Louisiana Governor John Bell Edwards said, "Louisiana has a long and storied history as a premier state for freight transportation. Thanks to Amazon's continued investment, the new jobs and opportunities created by this project will be of great value to Baton Rouge and the entire state."

In fact, this is Amazon's third similar investment in Louisiana in the past seven months. In December 2020, Amazon announced the opening of its first distribution center in Carencro, Louisiana, covering one million square feet (nearly 100,000 square meters) and creating more than 500 jobs. Unlike the project in Barutunri, the distribution center in Carencro is used to pick, pack and ship large customer items such as outdoor furniture, outdoor equipment or carpets.

In May, Amazon opened its first robotic fulfillment center in Shreveport, Louisiana, which is approximately 650,000 square feet.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated Amazon's retail business, which means that Amazon needs more logistics centers and more efficient delivery to ensure customer experience. It is not difficult to explain Amazon's frequent moves and massive expansion.
