Congestion worsens! A tornado hits the Port of Oakland, causing serious damage to the cargo hub

Recently, the Port of Oakland in the western United States was hit by a severe tornado , causing serious damage . A large number of containers were damaged and the normal operation of the port was restricted.

It is reported that the tornado swept through the freight at Wiri in South Auckland, and dozens of containers collapsed at the scene, making recovery work very difficult. And there are reports that the freight hub was seriously damaged in this incident, but the specific situation is still under investigation.

"The tornado caused significant damage to the site and displaced multiple containers. We are shocked by this unusual event," the Port of Oakland said in a statement.

In addition, train services near the Port of Auckland were temporarily affected, with southern and eastern lines cancelled. The impact of this tornado was significant, with the port not only severely damaged, but also congestion exacerbated.

In fact, the Port of Oakland was already very congested before. Brian Brandes, Maritime Director of the Port of Oakland, said: "The outbreak at China's Yantian Port has disrupted freight operations, and the incident has led to a series of chain reactions."

U.S. imports through Oakland are up 20 percent this year, driven by consumer demand, the port said . Most of the cargo comes from China or neighboring Asian countries , and containerized imports last month were up 26 percent year-over-year.

Surging trade continues to create a backlog of ships in Oakland, with vessels sometimes waiting for days at anchor in San Francisco Bay because of crowded berths. But the port says congestion should begin to ease in the fall .

From the perspective of domestic ports, due to the outbreak of the epidemic at Yantian Port , the port was severely congested and a large number of ships jumped to the port. Under such circumstances, shipping companies transferred their ships to Nansha Port, causing Nansha Port to quickly fall into congestion. Some sections of the road have become parking lots, with 24-hour congestion and no improvement in more than ten days .

With ports severely congested, it is already very difficult for sellers to ship their goods, but to make matters worse, Amazon workers are planning to go on strike on Prime Day.

German unions called on workers at seven Amazon warehouses to strike for several days on Monday to coincide with the global Prime Day promotion, Reuters reported in Berlin . It is reported that the German unions are organizing a three-day strike to fight for good pay and working conditions.

For sellers, this is undoubtedly adding insult to injury. Once the strike occurs, store shipments on Member Day may be delayed, and sellers will also be affected to a certain extent.
