Australian Online Shopping Preference Study

Australian Online Shopping Preference Study

Australian shoppers value timeliness of delivery

New research shows three quarters of Australian shoppers who choose same-day delivery only want guaranteed or fast delivery, while only a quarter of customers require same-day delivery.

The findings come from a survey of 1005 Australians commissioned by the Hubbed parcel collection network, which counts more than 2000 offline parcel sites including petrol stations, convenience stores, parcel lockers and independent retailers.

They found that 48 per cent of online shoppers who chose same-day delivery needed their parcel within two to three days, while 24 per cent of Australians chose same-day delivery for the guarantee that their parcel would actually arrive, and 28 per cent said they needed their order to be placed on the same day.

David McLean, CEO and founder of Hubbed, said online retail sales grew about 66% from March to December last year, and shoppers expect a seamless experience.

Most shoppers prefer to collect their parcels themselves . The survey showed that 59% of respondents found locations such as gas stations or parcel lockers easier to collect parcels from. Specifically, 18% of people think parcel lockers are the easiest location, while 11% choose small independent local businesses with longer opening hours.

More Australian shoppers want to buy Australian-made

Commonwealth Bank recently released its first Commonwealth Bank Consumer Insights Report, which outlines how the pandemic has changed consumer behaviour, expectations and intentions. The research found that more than 50% of Australian shoppers prefer to buy goods locally.

The report found that shoppers are increasingly turning to local online retailers and manufacturers, as well as suburban shopping centres and neighbourhood stores. These include leisure goods ( 59%), fashion (58%), electronics (55%) and groceries (53%).

Additionally, nearly two-thirds ( 61%) of consumers praise local businesses for their adaptability to the disruption caused by the pandemic.

The research found some interesting trends:

A quarter of consumers increased their online purchases during the pandemic, particularly with online retailers in Australia.

Nearly one in two people who said they shopped at domestic online retailers in 2020 said they would continue to do so in 2021.

Consumers who purchased goods from international online retailers said their purchases will now taper off or return to pre-pandemic levels.

The epidemic has brought about permanent changes in consumption. Australian consumers have formed the habit of online consumption, but online purchases will gradually return to pre-epidemic levels.
