The top six most popular e-commerce platforms in Indonesia during Ramadan 2021

Indonesians saw an increase in online shopping transactions during Ramadan 2021. According to data from the Indonesian E-Commerce Association ( IdEA) in the first week of Ramadan, online shopping transactions were twice as high as usual .


During Ramadan , Infogram Data Lab, the research arm of media monitoring company Binocular , surveyed the Indonesian market and found that six e -commerce platforms were the most popular: Shopee , Tokopedia , Bukalapak , Lazada , JD.ID and Blibli .


Between April 13, 2021 and May 12, 2021 , big data recorded a total of 7,279 news related to the region .


Based on share, the top-ranked platform is Tokopedia at 44.0% (3,205 news items out of 7,279 news items ) ; Shopee ranks second with 41.4% (3,012 news items) ; followed by Blibli (20.6% , 1,501 news items) ; Bukalapak (20.0% , 1,454 news items) ; Lazada (15.9% , 1,157 news items) and JD.ID (8.5% , 617 news items).


Even though Tokopedia had the highest news share, the most circulated news frequency among programs or promotions done during Ramadan was Shopee Big Ramadan Sale with 268 news pieces, accounting for 3.7% of the total coverage .


On the other hand, Infogram also analyzed the most popular product types in the region .


The most popular category was gadgets ( 25.3%) , followed by beauty products ( 6.4%) , telecom operator products ( 5.3%) , cooking products ( 5.2%) and banking products ( 4.2%).


The dominance of gadget products is indeed large, reaching a quarter of the total . Among them, the most popular brands are Samsung and Huawei, accounting for 3.9% of the total news respectively . It is followed by Realme (3.8%) , Oppo (3.4%) and Xiaomi (3.2%).


The top branded beauty categories (including skin care, makeup, body care, fragrance) are offered by both big local brands and branded independents , with the most popular brands being Wardah (1.3%) and Maybelline (0.9%) , followed by two local independents, By Lizzie Parra (BLP) and Avoskin.


It is worth mentioning that the telecom operator brand that appeared most frequently in news reports related to this market was Telkomsel (3.8%), followed by Smartfren (1.6%) and XL Axiata (1.4%).
