Affected by the epidemic, the South Korean government implemented large-scale blockade measures to prevent the spread of the epidemic . Remote work and online learning became active, so computer inventories began to be consumed rapidly.
South Korean market research firm IDC Korea announced on the 12th that domestic PC shipments in the first quarter of this year were 1.89 million units, an increase of 30.7% over the same period last year.
It is understood that this is the highest record in 10 years since the 1.94 million units shipped in the first quarter of 2012. Relevant data shows that desktop computers have increased by 12.1% and notebook computers have increased by 43.2% compared with last year.
Due to the combination of special courses and online courses in the new semester, computer shipments reached 1.17 million units , an increase of 45.9% over the same period last year. Driven by student demand, the share of notebook computers in home PCs also increased from 60.5% in the previous quarter to 73.0%. Shipments of gaming computers were about 150,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 23.5%.
It is understood that shipments in the education sector were 210,000 units, approximately two times more than the previous year, while shipments in the enterprise sector were 400,000 units , up 8.0% from the previous year.
Sangjun Kwon, director of IDC Korea , pointed out: "Due to the non- face-to-face teaching, home entertainment , and the construction of hybrid work environments caused by the epidemic , people's demand for computers is stronger than ever. In order to make the PC business profitable, a stable supply of quantity is required, and as the price of accessories rises , flexible quantity and price policies are needed. "
Although PC shipments continue to increase, the epidemic will eventually pass. Will the PC market continue to grow then?
Over the years, the PC industry has always been described by some as a "sunset industry." In fact, in recent years, PC devices have also had many highlights in product evolution and technological innovation.
Even though the demand for computer use has been compressed to "professional" office or gaming scenarios, the PC market has bucked the trend and risen during the pandemic, proving that PCs are irreplaceable by smartphones or tablet devices and are still a huge consumer market.
