Recently, Kpop4planet, a K-pop fan platform that encourages climate action, launched a social media campaign asking Indonesian e-commerce platform Tokopedia to use 100% renewable energy by 2030. The social media campaign is urging Tokopedia to take concrete action. In the first quarter of 2021 , Tokopedia became the most visited e-commerce platform in Indonesia, with 126.4 million monthly visits and 38.93 million unique visitors. 80 % - 90% of Indonesia 's 158 million Internet users shop on Tokopedia. This is also why K-pop fans believe that Tokopedia must lead by example and make positive changes to be able to obtain electricity from renewable energy. Through the petition, Kpop4planet asked Tokopedia to take three steps. First, set an example for Indonesia’s leading e-commerce platform and commit to sourcing electricity from 100% renewable energy sources such as solar and wind by 2030. Second, disclose the carbon footprint of the company's operations to the public. Third, develop a long-term decarbonization plan based on international standards such as the Paris Agreement. It is understood that Tokopedia started operations in 2009 and currently has more than 90 million monthly active users. Especially since BTS and BLACKPINK signed a partnership with Tokopedia , the platform has seen a rapid increase in users. It is estimated that Tokopedia's carbon footprint has increased significantly with its rapid growth over the past five years . To support its operations, Tokopedia leases data centers across the country. Today, the electricity consumption of these data centers results in high carbon emissions. According to the 2019 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), Indonesia's energy is still dominated by fossil energy, with its energy mix consisting of 65.5% coal , 19.3% natural gas , 3.5% oil, and 11.7% EBT (new and renewable energy). Globally, global technology companies such as Amazon , Google , Netflix and Apple have pledged decarbonization plans, including Tokopedia’s partner Gojek. For example, Netflix and Amazon have pledged to achieve zero emissions by 2022 and 2040, respectively, while Naver, the platform that runs V Live, has pledged to “become carbon negative by 2040.” As more people demand that e-commerce use renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions, this trend may become global.
