Official data shows that in the past year, the growth of e-commerce has increased exponentially. Affected by the epidemic, people's demand for online shopping has increased rapidly . Global e-commerce is developing, with Australia and New Zealand growing the fastest .
E-commerce growth in the Oceania region has been slow over the past few years, but it seems that the unique environment of 2020 has accelerated its adoption of online retail. Multiple reports, including the Salesforce Holiday Insights Hub and the 2020 Holiday forecasts report, have ranked Australia and New Zealand as the fastest growing countries for e-commerce in the world.
The two countries saw a 108% surge in the second quarter of 2020, followed by another 107% surge in the third quarter of this year. Although there was a slight drop in online traffic from the second quarter to the third quarter, these figures are still astronomical when compared to the same period last year.
This outstanding growth was also reflected in Australia Post’s recent e-commerce industry report , which saw a huge amount of online activity, setting a record for digital purchases, with Australians spending an "incredible $50.46 billion online throughout the year" in 2020, dwarfing the $32.1 billion in e-commerce spending in 2019. Excluding dining out and food-related spending, online purchases in Australia accounted for 16.3% of all retail spending in 2020 , a figure that shows a huge shift in the country's consumer habits .
Ben Franzi, general manager of parcel and courier services at Australia Post, said : " Due to the impact of the pandemic last year , Australians spent more time at home , making e-commerce an essential shopping channel for the country for the first time in history . "
Meanwhile, GroupM’s latest This Year, Next Year: E-commerce Forecast Report said that e-commerce growth accelerated significantly in the first half of 2020, with Australian sales set to remain robust and increase significantly in the second half of the year.
The media organization noted in the report that packaged goods manufacturers were the big winners from last year's accelerated shift to online commerce as people's purchasing methods transitioned from offline to online, increasing demand for packaged products and their e-commerce sales grew 277% in 2020.
