American teenagers prefer second-hand goods

Recently, an organization conducted a survey of 7,000 teenagers (with an average age of 16.1 years old) in 47 states in the United States and discovered some consumption preferences and related characteristics of Generation Z.

Second-hand goods are preferred by teenagers

The survey found that Generation Z is a conscious generation, and more and more young people pay attention to racial equality and environmental protection. At the same time, we can also see that thriftiness has become a strong pursuit among young people, which means that second-hand goods have been favored by young people.

Survey data shows that 47% of teenagers bought second-hand goods and 55% sold second-hand goods in 2020. This has also made second-hand stores and platforms popular among American teenagers, jumping from 23rd place in 2020 to 10th place this year.

As a consumer group that cannot be ignored, teenagers contribute $830 billion in sales to the United States each year , of which second-hand goods account for 8% of sales.

The new generation’s preference for online consumption has driven online usage of online platforms to an all-time high. Amazon remains the top choice for teenagers, accounting for 56% of the online shopping market share, while Snapchat and TikTok, as the top two social media platforms, lead consumer fashion trends.

Sportswear best sellers

Among the trends favored by teenagers, sportswear is very popular, and the brands ranked at the top of consumers' favorites are almost all related to sportswear. Survey data shows that the most popular brands among American teenagers are Nike (ranked first in both footwear and sportswear), PacSun, Adidas and Lululemon.

The most popular beauty brand among American teenagers (female) is Ulta, which has been ranked first as Sephora's preferred beauty destination for the fifth consecutive time (with a share of 46%). Apparently, 80% of female teenagers are willing to spend more for clean or natural beauty.

In addition, women’s skincare spending ranks ahead of makeup spending, with 86% of women using online platforms as a source for beauty brand and trend discovery . Tarte has been ranked first in the cosmetics brand for 7 consecutive times , and Elf has set a new record in the survey of the second preferred makeup brand . CeraVe has been ranked first as the top skincare brand for the second consecutive time.

The above are some of the preferences of American teenagers. Sellers who sell products to this age group can pay special attention to them.
