Graphene masks recalled in Canada due to health risks

Recently, the Canadian Ministry of Health announced the recall of disposable masks made of graphene because consumers may inhale fine particles found in the product when using this mask, which may cause health hazards.

According to Health Canada, graphene is a new type of nanomaterial that may have antiviral and antibacterial properties, and it warns consumers not to wear clothing containing graphene biomass.

It is reported that this mask containing graphene has been sold in schools and daycare institutions and used by adults and children. It is very likely that it has been distributed to medical institutions. The Canadian Ministry of Health stated that mask manufacturers need to provide relevant data to assess the potential health risks of masks containing graphene.

The Canadian government said that anyone who wears a graphene mask and experiences new or unexplained shortness of breath, discomfort or difficulty breathing should consult their healthcare provider.

Currently, Health Canada has notified distributors, importers and manufacturers to stop selling and recall the affected products. In addition, Health Canada has written to provinces and territories, advising them to stop the illegal use of masks containing graphene and will take appropriate actions to prevent the import and sale of graphene masks.

ZEN Graphene Solutions Ltd., a Canadian next-generation nanomaterial technology company exploring the use of graphene in PPE and medicines, supports Health Canada’s decision to take steps to regulate the use of graphene and remove products that are unsafe for Canadians.

The company said it is focused on developing technologies that help protect people and the environment. Given the need to better protect frontline workers and those most vulnerable, it remains committed to working with Health Canada to ensure additional protection is provided to those who need it.
