European cross-border e-commerce sales reach $146 billion

According to foreign media reports, the European Cross-Border E-Commerce Organization recently released the "Top 500 Cross-Border Retail Companies in Europe" , showing that the cross-border turnover of European multinational omni-channel retailers and online stores reached 146 billion euros last year , with IKEA ranking first.

It is reported that European cross-border e-commerce sales (excluding travel expenses) increased by 35% year-on-year . During the epidemic, people began to make cross-border purchases more and more frequently, intentionally or unintentionally , and cross-border e-commerce experienced a very prosperous period.

During this period, many cross-border companies and cross-border sales platforms performed very well and their performance soared. It is reported that IKEA maintained its leading position in the third "European Top 500 Cross-border Retail" with a total turnover of 53.25 billion euros. In addition to IKEA, many other cross-border companies ranked among the top ten in successful online cross-border businesses with their outstanding performance in 2020 .

The top ten of this year’s “European Cross-border Retail 500” is made up of only omnichannel retailers, including IKEA , Pandora ,   Smyths Toys , LEGO , Nespresso , Expert , Cos , Swarovski , &Other Stories , etc.

Marketplace platforms and retailers such as Zalando , Vivino , C&A , and TomTom are already outside the top ten .

In 2020, total online B2C sales in Europe increased by 24% to 573 billion euros. 2020 has been a year of trouble for the retail industry across Europe , which has suffered from the impact of the pandemic. As a result, many have been forced to take a historic step towards e-commerce and accelerate planned investments in the field .

As non-essential stores closed during the lockdown, retailers turned to the internet, prioritizing the expansion of cross-border trade through online stores. Omnichannel retailers saw an average growth of 45% in online commerce, and even 70% in the fourth quarter of 2020.

However, the results of the transformation may not be so fast. In terms of market opportunities, some retailers that have properly operated e-commerce businesses before have an advantage and have developed rapidly in the past year. They have made full use of the continuous digital advantages and therefore ranked among the top in international cross-border rankings.
