Ocado leads online grocery market with sales of £599m

It is reported that British online grocery retailer Ocado recently revealed that its sales in the first quarter of this year increased by nearly 40% year-on-year to 599 million pounds. In the same period last year, the quarterly sales were 428.8 million pounds, an increase of 39.7%.

In the 13 weeks to February 28, Ocado 's average order value was £147 . In the same period last year, the average order value was £110. The company said: "This was due to strong seasonal demand over the festive period, combined with the changing lockdown measures. "

Ocado Group, which has invested in customer service centres across the country in a joint venture with Marks & Spencer over the past 12 months, attributed the growth to a growing trend towards online grocery shopping , which has been accelerated by the impact of the pandemic .

Melanie Smith, CEO of Ocado Retail, commented: “Over the past year, a large number of UK consumers have made a permanent shift to online shopping. Ocado Retail is best placed to serve these customers as we continue to improve the customer experience, add new products, offer better value and maintain high levels of customer service through our partnership with M&S.

The partnership is understood to have launched in September after M&S replaced Waitrose as Ocado's grocery supplier.

The second quarter of 2021 marks the first anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic , which is still accelerating people's demand for online groceries , which is still growing rapidly .

This year's quarterly sales figures reflect Ocado 's strategic positioning during a period when other physical stores were forced to close completely and online grocery was widely accepted. Ocado said it expects strong growth in the coming years as it continues to invest in developing online grocery.

Ocado is understood to be opening two more warehouses this year and is looking for at least 12 new microsites, mainly in London, to support the rollout of its Ocado Zoom instant concept service , which delivers within an hour of ordering.

Ocado is the world's largest online food retailer that sells only online . Under the influence of the epidemic, its development has been even more rapid. Ocado mainly sells a variety of groceries including flowers , toys , and magazines .
