Türkiye's e-commerce market exceeds 73 billion yuan, with the rise of middle-aged and elderly "shopping addicts"

The number of online shoppers reached 37.2 million, with middle-aged and elderly people becoming the bright spot

The report shows that the number of Internet users in Turkey reached 67 million in 2020, and the number of online shoppers reached 37.2 million. Among them, the proportion of middle-aged and elderly online shoppers has become a highlight.

In the past few years, the proportion of online shoppers in Turkey aged 55-64 has remained between 30% and 40%, but last year it soared to 70.5%, which is almost catching up with the 74.9% of online shoppers in the young generation Z.

Turkish consumers aged 55 and above used to be conservative and cautious about online shopping, but their attitude changed under the impact of the epidemic. In order to maintain social distance and health, they used and fell in love with the practicality, diversity, reliability and cheapness of online shopping. People in this age group quickly integrated into the e-commerce ecosystem and have now become the main group of online shoppers in Turkey.

Türkiye's e-commerce scale exceeded 73 billion yuan last year

According to the report, the scale of e-commerce in Turkey increased by 43% year-on-year in 2020 to US$11.3 billion (about RMB 73.1 billion) , and per capita online shopping expenditure reached US$304 (the global average online shopping expenditure was US$703).

At the same time, 89.5% of Turkish people have visited e-commerce websites , and 75% of them have finally made a purchase. The data also shows that mobile shopping and social marketing will be the main trends in Turkish e-commerce. 97% of Internet users have smartphones, and 70% of Turkish people use social media. Turkish netizens spend an average of 8 hours online every day, of which 3 hours are spent on social media.

In addition, big data push will also become one of the trends in Turkish e-commerce. Damla Kaé , account manager of Wish Turkey , said that Wish has developed a new algorithm in cooperation with technology companies in Turkey, and products will be displayed to those with purchasing potential based on user characteristics. With the support of this special algorithm, the sales of successful transactions account for more than 70% of the total sales.

There is still great potential for the development of e-commerce in Turkey. According to Statista data, the scale of e-commerce in Turkey is expected to reach US$14.89 billion in 2021 and will reach US$256.73 by 2025. Sellers can pay more attention to this.
