Moreover, since the outbreak of the epidemic, 60% of consumers have increased their online spending; for consumers who previously shopped online frequently, this proportion is 71%. What do consumers value when shopping online? More than half ( 54%) of consumers said the pandemic has changed their expectations for online shopping. When browsing online sites, the top three things consumers value most are pricing that is easy to find and understand (66%), clearly displayed discounts and specials (63%), and accurate and helpful product descriptions (62%).
During online shopping, 50% of consumers want no advertisements or third-party interruptions, 35% only want to see products and offers relevant to them, and 35% want websites to provide clear guidance.
To drive consumers to spend more, top motivators include loyalty programs with exclusive discounts ( 54%), visually appealing websites (44%) and personalized shopping experiences, such as showing products that are the right size (36%) or recommending products based on shopping history (33%).
When it comes to whether or not they would repurchase in a store, consumers consider factors such as free shipping ( 62%), lower comparable prices (53%) and a free and easy return process (62%).
Differences among different consumer groups Age plays an important role in shopping device preference . Among consumers aged 18-24 , 48% prefer to use smartphones when shopping online, while 33% prefer to use laptops or tablets; among consumers aged 55-84 , 16 % use smartphones , while 87% prefer to use laptops or tablets . In addition, environmental protection is also an important factor that consumers consider when shopping . As can be seen from the figure below, in 2020, consumers are more concerned about the source of products, the use of packaging materials, and emissions generated by supply chain transportation. In South Africa and the UAE , 46% and 45% of consumers respectively said that retailers with good environmental concepts are very important, while in the Netherlands this proportion drops to 21%.
