Sales increased by 160%! Canada Loblaw e-commerce is developing strongly

The epidemic has driven the development of e-commerce in various countries, and more and more consumers have begun to shop online. Recently, Loblaw, Canada's largest food retailer , released a report saying that in the fourth quarter, Loblaw 's in-store and online sales both increased significantly. In addition, Loblaw 's earnings in this quarter and this fiscal year were slightly higher than analysts' expectations.

 

According to Supermarket News , in the fourth quarter ending January 2, Loblaw 's retail sales were $13.04 billion, up 15.2% from $11.32 billion in the same period last year. Among them, Loblaw's food retail sales increased 16.9% from $7.96 billion to $9.3 billion .

 

In the 53 weeks of fiscal 2020, retail sales totaled $51.86 billion, up 10.1% from $47.1 billion in 2019. Among them, food retail sales increased 11.3% in 53 weeks, from $33.76 billion to $37.6 billion, and same-store sales increased 8.6% .

 

Loblaw said the results reflected strong growth in sales of related products such as food during the period.

 

E-commerce sales increased by 160%

 

As more consumers turned to online shopping during the pandemic , Loblaw 's e-commerce sales grew 160% compared to the fourth quarter of 2019. At the end of fiscal 2002, e-commerce sales for the full year were up 178%.

 

“We ended 2020 with a year full of change, but we are entering 2021 with solid and consistent progress,” said Sarah Ruth Davis, president of Loblaw Companies . “ This year, we achieved $2.8 billion in online sales , compared to $1 billion a year ago .

 

In addition, Davis also said that online retail has risen sharply, which is the direction of the retail industry, but at the same time, this trend also brings corresponding challenges. Online grocery is a higher-cost channel, so Loblaw is taking measures to maintain its leading position while managing profits.

 

"Looking ahead, our outlook is positive," Loblaw Chairman and CEO Galen Weston said on a call with analysts. "As the pandemic dissipates, Loblaw will be well-positioned with stronger consumer relationships, conviction in our core business, and momentum in growth areas that align with the lives of Canadians."
