Visa has revealed changes in payment methods and shopping behaviors among Indonesian consumers during the pandemic . The findings come from the Visa Consumer Payment Attitudes study , which shows that the pandemic may accelerate the development of a cashless society in Indonesia, which is expected to be achieved by 2026, four years earlier than the previous estimate of 2030.

Due to concerns about the spread of the virus , 60 % of Indonesian consumers said they carry less cash, and 63% of Indonesian consumers also realized that they use cash less frequently . In addition, seven in ten ( 66%) people said they no longer need to carry cash, indicating a shift in consumer behavior .

Riko Abdurrahman, president of PT Visa Global Indonesia , said that during the pandemic, personal safety and payment hygiene are top priorities, which has prompted many Indonesian consumers to try contactless payments . Indonesian consumers have experienced the advantages of contactless payments , especially in terms of security , comfort and efficiency .

Therefore, it is believed that consumption patterns will change after the epidemic ends, and digital transactions will become the choice of more people.

Rizal Edwin, assistant undersecretary for digital economy at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs , said people are shopping online more frequently as they spend more time at home.

Edwin said: "This change is closely related to the spread of the epidemic. The survey results of Indonesia's DBS Bank show that 66% of the respondents said that they will continue to shop online after the pandemic." It is not difficult to see that after the epidemic is over, it will become a trend to reduce the use of cash and shop online more frequently .

Data shows that 59% of Indonesian consumers shop online about 12 times a month , and home delivery is a popular service among Indonesian consumers. Among them, 88% of Indonesian consumers choose to use this service, and 70% of Indonesian consumers use this service about 7 times a month.

Online payments have become mainstream and have penetrated every aspect of Indonesian people’s lives, which also shows that Indonesia’s e-commerce and digital payment industries are developing at an astonishing speed.
