Coles booms in Australia as online sales grow 61%

Australian supermarket giant Coles has reported another six months of significant sales growth in the period to January 3 .

The group's NPAT (net profit after tax) increased by 14.5% from A$489 million to A$560 million, while sales revenue increased by 8.1% from A$18.8 billion to A$20.4 billion.

Online sales increased by 61%

The group's overall online sales grew 61 per cent , with Coles attributing the growth to investments it made over the half year .

In its supermarket business alone , total online sales grew 48 per cent, contributing $1 billion to the company's total sales revenue for the half year .

The company said consumers have responded positively to the improved user experience.

As with its supermarket business, Coles' liquor business saw online sales grow 90 per cent year- on-year, which the company said was due to the opening of three e- commerce "dark stores" in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia as a way to increase capacity, streamline order fulfilment and improve delivery speeds for customers.

Coles launches new service

Coles Supermarket is bringing another level of service to online shopping with 'Coles Plus', a new subscription-based service designed to reward its members.

The service, which costs $19 a month , gives customers special deals on alcohol purchases, home delivery and unlimited use of the supermarket giant's new "Click & Collect Rapid" service .

Click & Collect Rapid customers can order up to 40 items with a minimum spend of $30 and pay a flat fee of $5 to have their items picked up, packaged and ready for pickup 90 minutes later .

Coles e-commerce chief executive Ben Hassing said Coles Online was built on 20 years of experience and was designed to provide a seamless customer experience and enhance the shopping experience for Coles Plus members.

We’ve seen significant growth in demand for online grocery shopping and we’re investing in the customer experience, which is having a positive impact on customer satisfaction,” he said. The feedback from Australian families who have already used Coles Plus has been very encouraging and we plan to add more exciting updates in the future.

In summary, affected by the epidemic, Australian e-commerce is also in a period of rapid development. Retailers should seize the opportunity, introduce corresponding measures, and gain a larger market share.
