French e-commerce sales reached 112 billion euros in 2020, with beauty and health products being the hottest sellers

According to the Fevad annual survey , online sales in France reached 112 billion euros in 2020 , up 8.5% from the same period last year , accounting for 13.4% of total retail sales in France . There were 1.8 billion online transactions , an annual growth rate of 5.8% .

 

Online sales are booming, with beauty, health care and consumer products selling well

 

French e-commerce has been growing very fast throughout 2020, with the most significant growth in the last quarter . Due to the epidemic and the lockdown, online sales in France grew strongly in November . Although physical stores partially reopened in December , online sales continued to grow rapidly.

 

It is reported that online sales during last year's Christmas period ( November to December) increased by 23% compared to Christmas 2019 to 25 billion euros .

 

Last year, in terms of some of the hot-selling products online, the beauty and health care and consumer goods sectors had the strongest growth , with sales increasing by 52% and 42% respectively . It can be seen that people's consumption preferences have changed, and the epidemic has made people pay more attention to health. Next are technology products and furniture / decorations , which increased by 34% and 24% respectively.

 

E-commerce channels are popular, with 17,400 new e-commerce websites added last year

 

Last year, many French physical retailers were rapidly digitizing and moving to e - commerce to make up for the losses caused by the closure of physical businesses . This shift directly led to a surge in the number of French e-commerce sites .

 

It is reported that the number of French e-commerce websites increased by 17,400 last year , and about 53% of new brands were sold online. In 2019, French e-commerce sales accounted for only 9.8% of total retail sales, but now it has reached 13.4%.

 

Online sales at French chains grew 53% year-on-year last year , reaching 100% during the two lockdowns , according to FEVAD .

 

Amazon is the leader, while local French e-commerce is gradually rising

 

The market has also witnessed an increase in online sales . In France, Amazon in 2020 remained the most visited e-commerce website and app, with nearly 36 million unique visitors per month.

 

In addition to Amazon, French local e-commerce platforms also grew strongly. According to Médiamétrie ’s survey data, in the fourth quarter of 2020, French e-commerce platforms Cdiscount and Fnac competed for the podium, with monthly unique visitors reaching 25.6 million and 22.3 million respectively.

 

At present, the development speed of local e-commerce in France is getting faster and faster, and its potential is huge.
