The latest data from Stocklytics.com shows that as of August this year, Temu has been downloaded more than 735 million times worldwide.
The downloads in May , June, July and August all exceeded 50 million, reaching 52.79 million, 50.38 million, 57.68 million and 54.42 million respectively. The downloads in August this year increased by 42% year-on-year, and the downloads in June and July were nearly three times that of Amazon.
But in February, Temu's downloads were only 30.51 million, the lowest in the first eight months of this year. However, as consumers seek more affordable goods, Temu's visits exceeded 500 million in the first quarter of this year.
According to foreign media reports, due to the surge in demand for affordable online shopping in the United States, nearly one-third of Temu's 735 million global downloads were completed in the United States. This also made the United States quickly become Temu's largest market, and at the same time made Temu competitive with Amazon and eBay .
According to AppMagic, Americans have downloaded Temu more than 200 million times since its launch two years ago, and use it five times more often than Europeans. The United Kingdom ( 5% ) , Germany ( 4% ) , France ( 4% ) and Spain ( 4% ) each account for about 5% of Temu 's total downloads ; Mexico, Temu's second largest market, accounts for 10% of total downloads.
However, due to policy influence, Temu is slowly "de-Americanizing". We have previously introduced that Temu's market focus will shift from the United States to Europe and other markets. Barclays Bank also recently stated that Temu's influence in the US market showed signs of weakening in the second quarter of this year.
Barclays said that over the past three quarters, Temu's number of new users in the United States has dropped by nearly half and has returned to the level of the first quarter of 2023. The bank believes that Temu's focus may be shifting from actively acquiring new users in the United States to improving retention and expanding other regional markets. This shift shows that strategically, Temu has begun to prioritize growth in other regions compared to the US market.
However, according to data from Barclays Bank, Temu's customer retention rate in the United States has also declined to a certain extent: compared with the first quarter of 2023, only 34% of customers repurchased in the second quarter of 2024, while the customer repurchase rate in the first quarter of 2023 exceeded 46%.
In general, Temu's achievements overseas are remarkable. In addition, given the importance of the US market, even if Temu begins to pay attention to other markets, it will not completely relax its development in the US market.
