Amazon's operational needs have continued to rise in the past two years. In April this year, the number of job openings for this position soared about five times year-on-year, setting a new record for growth. Product development positions and operational positions complement each other, and the number of job openings has also increased sixfold, with an average monthly salary higher than that of operational positions.
Amazon operations were once considered a "young person's job", and operators who were getting older but had not yet entered management were forced to find a way out. Cross-border e-commerce newcomer platforms became a highly suitable destination.
Currently, the demand for TikTok operations, Temu operations, and even SHEIN operations personnel has skyrocketed. From top sellers to small and medium-sized sellers, everyone is recruiting. The industry's top sellers are willing to pay 20k to recruit TikTok operations, and 50k to recruit TikTok platform managers. These platforms challenge Amazon and independent station channels and seize the market, with their market share expanding rapidly. Operation personnel are expected to usher in a second spring in their careers.
Amazon operations recruitment increased fivefold, with Shanghai offering the highest salary
According to statistics from Zhiyouji, the number of Amazon operations recruitment positions fell by half in 2022, and the job demand rebounded strongly in 2023, increasing by 177%; this year, Amazon operations recruitment has accelerated, increasing by 343% over last year. Among them, the number of recruitment positions in January, February, March, and April increased by 439%, 223%, 278%, and 497% respectively over the same period last year. In particular, the number of recruitment positions in April increased by nearly 5 times, ushering in a peak in industry recruitment.
( Comparison of Amazon operations recruitment positions in the past two years)
Compared with the beginning of the year, there have been some changes in the ten regions with the highest demand for Amazon operations. The current ranking from high to low is Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Dongguan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Zhongshan, Xuchang and Jinhua. Among them, Shenzhen has 4.7K jobs , accounting for 27.1% ; Guangzhou has 1.5K jobs, accounting for 8.4% ; Xiamen, Hangzhou and other places account for about 2% to 3% respectively.
In April, the top five regions , Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hangzhou and Dongguan, increased by 4.9 times , 4.3 times , 2.1 times , 1 times and 3.4 times respectively compared with the same period last year, and the recruitment enthusiasm was even higher than the "Golden March".
Although the industry's demand for Amazon operations has increased significantly this year, the salary for the position has decreased instead of increased. BOSS Zhipin collected data from more than 1 million samples across the country and found that in January this year, the average monthly salary for Amazon operations reached a peak of 6,778 yuan in the past year, and then fell in February and March, and rebounded slightly to 6,280 yuan in April.
Shenzhen, where cross-border companies gather, is in a similar situation. In January, the average monthly salary for Amazon operations was 11,469 yuan, which continued to drop in the next two months before rising to 10,220 yuan in April, up 9.27% from March, which is good for operations staff to apply for jobs.
(Changes in monthly wages for Amazon operations in Shenzhen over the past year)
In contrast, the employment situation in Guangzhou is grim. In the past year, the average monthly salary of Amazon operators in the region has not exceeded 9,000 yuan, and was only 8,943 yuan during the peak recruitment season in October last year. In February this year, the monthly salary for this position in Guangzhou reached 8,180 yuan, the highest point so far this year, and then continued to decline in March and April. In April, the monthly salary for the position fell by 9.51% to only 7,163 yuan.
(Changes in monthly wages for Amazon operations in Guangzhou over the past year)
The average monthly salary for this position in Xiamen reached its highest level in nearly a year in January, at 7,846 yuan, and then fell for three consecutive months to only 6,223 yuan in April; the average monthly salary in Hangzhou is closest to that in Shenzhen, exceeding 10,000 yuan several times in the past year, and although it has declined in the past two months, it was still 9,373 yuan in April; Dongguan's salary level is similar to that of Xiamen, with 7,510 yuan in February being the highest in the past year, and the average monthly salary in April was 7,060 yuan.
Outside of cities with high demand, Amazon operations salaries in Shanghai and Beijing are higher. The average monthly salary for positions in Shanghai has been above 10,000 yuan in the past year, rising sharply to 17,240 yuan in January, and declining in February and March, but still 15,680 yuan in April. Although the recruitment volume in these two cities has also doubled, they are not the first choice for operations job seekers due to the small number of cross-border companies and small operating base.
In terms of income range, Shenzhen operations have the highest annual salary , with 27% of Amazon operations earning less than 89,200 yuan, another 27% between 89,200 yuan and 120,800 yuan, 19% between 120,800 yuan and 152,500 yuan, 11% between 152,500 yuan and 184,100 yuan, and 16% above 184,100 yuan.
In Guangzhou , 31% of Amazon operators have an annual salary of less than 70,700 yuan, 28% are between 70,700 and 94,100 yuan, 19% are between 94,100 and 117,500 yuan, 10% are between 117,500 and 140,900 yuan, and only 12% have an annual salary above 140,900 yuan.
In Xiamen , half of Amazon's operators have an annual salary of less than 72,800 yuan; in Dongguan , 49% of operators have an annual salary of less than 82,300 yuan; in contrast, in Hangzhou , only 33% of operators have an annual salary of less than 85,200 yuan.
Amazon's operations group is very young. Nationwide, about 60% of operators are under 24 years old. The industry has absorbed many newcomers, and only 10% are 30 years old and above. Therefore, many operators are facing an age crisis.
An operator said that for Amazon operators who are not particularly capable at work, the chances of successfully submitting a resume after the age of 30 are much lower. "This industry is still a job for young people. If you are a girl, you can't find a job if you are married but don't have children. If you have one child, you will be asked if you have plans for a second child. Newcomers are young, energetic, obedient, and cheap. Who doesn't like them?"
In addition to age factors, another reason why veteran operators are easily eliminated is that the industry threshold is low and the training period for new employees is short.
Industry insider Chen Yinbing pointed out that the cross-border industry has three special difficulties: low threshold, resource consumption, and luck. Among them, "low threshold" means that the entry threshold is too low, so that a large number of young and cheap newcomers can do 70-80 points of work after a few months of short-term adaptation. This is of course a constant threat to a large number of practitioners whose actual ability is only 70-80 points. In other industries, it is rare for newcomers to be able to achieve a professional level similar to that of old employees after only six months of work.
"Of course, this cannot be simply attributed to the practitioners' lack of ambition. The nature of the industry and the division of labor determine that the most important ability of most practitioners is the ability to use tools, and using tools is not difficult for newcomers, which allows them to more easily get started with the work content that their predecessors relied on for survival." This is the fundamental reason for the rapid iteration of operations personnel.
When Amazon operations wants to change positions, product development positions that require close communication are a popular option.
Amazon's product development recruitment increased 6 times, and the salary is higher than that of operations
As competition on the platform becomes increasingly fierce, the bonus period for new products is getting shorter and shorter. Sellers need to spend more time selecting products to maintain appropriate profits, and the demand for product development positions has increased significantly.
According to Zhiyouji data, Amazon's product development job recruitment has been rising, with a 225% increase in 2023 compared to 2022, and a 418% increase in 2024 compared to 2023. From February to April this year, the number of product development recruitments continued to rise, and in April it increased 6.6 times compared to the same period last year.
The demand for this position across the country is different from that of operations positions. The top ten regions with the highest demand are Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Dongguan, Changsha, Hefei, Wuhan and Jinhua, of which Shenzhen accounts for 30% and Guangzhou accounts for 10%.
The average salary for product development is higher than that for operations. BOSS Zhipin collected data from 330,000 samples nationwide and found that the average monthly salary for product development positions was 7,042 yuan in January, the highest in nearly a year, and then continued to decline for the next three months, reaching 6,471 yuan in April.
Taking this position in Shenzhen as an example, the average monthly salary has been above 10,500 yuan for half of the past year , soaring to 14,350 yuan in February, and then falling again to 9,446 yuan in April. In Shenzhen, 10% of Amazon product developers have an annual salary of less than 74,000 yuan. If the annual salary reaches 120,000 yuan, it will exceed 50% of its peers, and if it reaches 156,000 yuan, it will exceed 75% of its peers, and if it reaches 198,000 yuan, it will leave 90% of its peers behind.

In January, the average monthly salary for this position in Guangzhou rose to 9,493 yuan, and then began to decline, falling to 8,023 yuan in April. 10% of developers earn less than 60,000 yuan a year, and an annual salary of 98,000 yuan would exceed half of their peers, 128,000 yuan would exceed 75% of their peers, and 164,000 yuan would exceed 90% of their peers.

Product development positions are more tolerant of age. Nationwide, 49% of developers are under 24 years old, 29% are between 25 and 29 years old, and 22% are 30 years old and above. For operations positions, 60% are under 24 years old, 30% are between 25 and 29 years old, and only 12% are over 30 years old. In addition, product development is a standard position for cross-border companies, so it can indeed be a transfer option for operations.
An industry insider analyzed that, compared with the two positions, the salary and commission points of operations are higher. If you want to get a high salary, you can do operations and then develop towards management or team leader. However, considering your future personal development, you think that the prospect of doing development is better. You can accumulate unique supply chain resources, precipitate market sensitivity, and product design skills, which will help diversify your re-employment options.
Sellers often say that working on Amazon is "30% operation and 70% product", but under the trend of platform compliance, it is already "20% operation and 80% product", and excellent developers are very valuable. People in this position need to study market demand and competition, conduct market research, competition analysis and demand analysis, and independently develop products based on analysis or operational needs. They have high requirements for market familiarity and data analysis capabilities.
A Shenzhen seller is offering a salary of 18-30K and is looking for a headhunter to recruit product developers . The candidates are required to have 2 years or more of experience in Amazon product selection, experience in developing popular products and independently responsible for product projects; be proficient in product research methods and competitive product analysis on platforms such as Amazon, Walmart, and eBay, be familiar with mainstream European and American markets and consumer behavior, have a strong sensitivity and insight into the market, and have a certain understanding of product and market positioning. The company prefers people with more than 1 year of experience in finished product public model product development, and will give priority to those who are good at finding relevant foreign websites and forums and have experience in developing popular products.
TikTok and Temu operations recruitments are booming, sellers offer high salaries of 20k
As the difficulty of doing business on Amazon continues to increase, sellers of all sizes are learning about emerging platforms and hope to achieve performance growth by expanding platforms. Platforms such as Temu, TikTok, and SHEIN are rapidly attacking overseas, with high traffic and continuous positive feedback from sellers, becoming the first choice for layout, and the demand for operators is also rising.
1. TikTok operation recruitment increased 6 times, and the salary was 20k for big sales
TikTok has become popular all over the world. According to a report released by the well-known data agency Statista, as of April 2024, TikTok has been downloaded more than 4.92 billion times worldwide, with more than 1.582 billion monthly active users, making it the fifth most popular social app in the world . The top four are Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp. These users are potential buyers, and the industry is flocking to them.
Since 2022, the number of TikTok operations recruits has begun to rise rapidly, with a 229% increase in 2023 compared to 2022. So far, 2024 has increased by 556% compared to 2023, with a sharp increase of 633% in April. Although the number of recruits has increased, the salary of TikTok operations has remained basically the same as last year, with a slight increase.
( Comparison of TikTok operation recruitment positions in the past two years )
The top ten regions in China with the highest demand for TikTok operations recruitment are Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Beijing, Xiamen, Dongguan, Quanzhou, Qingdao and Fuzhou, among which Shenzhen accounts for 24.7% , Guangzhou accounts for 11.2% and Shanghai accounts for 4.3% .
When cross-border companies recruit, 45.4% of positions require a college degree, and 36.4% require a bachelor's degree. In terms of work experience, 50% require 1-3 years of experience, while 30% require no experience. You can give Amazon operations a try.
A Fortune 500 listed company in Shenzhen is recruiting TikTok store operators with a salary of 15K-25K, 14 months' salary; Wantuo Science and Technology is recruiting TikTok operators with a salary of 11K-20K, requiring a bachelor's degree or above and English level 6 or above; Zehui Technology is recruiting TikTok operators with a salary of 6K-11K; Yibai Network is recruiting TikTok operations managers with a salary of 16K-30K, and is also recruiting a TikTok business unit head with a salary of 25K-45K.
2. Temu's operational needs surge, and big sellers are recruiting
Temu was launched in September 2022 and has now entered 50 countries and regions around the world, covering Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania and South Africa. With the rapid growth of users, merchants are flocking to the platform.
Temu has only been online for a short time, and compared with other platform operators, Temu's operating model determines that the operational space is very small . Therefore , in the first half of last year, there were almost no recruitments for Temu operation positions in the market . In the second half of the year, the demand for operations emerged, and this year the demand for this position has exploded.
Temu's hosting model is mainly suitable for factory-type enterprises, followed by cross-border trade enterprises. Therefore, the demand areas of Temu's operations are different from those of Amazon. The top ten regions in terms of recruitment demand are Shenzhen (accounting for 19.7%), Jinhua (12.5%), Guangzhou (11.4%), Shantou, Wuhan, Shanghai, Dongguan, Hangzhou, Xuchang, and Ningbo.
The recruitment requirements for this position are relatively loose. In terms of academic qualifications, nearly 60% of the positions require a college degree, and more than 20% require a bachelor's degree. In terms of experience, nearly 60% require 1-3 years of experience, and 30% have no experience requirements.
Among the big sellers, Saiwei is recruiting Temu operations, with a salary of 5-8K, 13 days of salary, two days off a week, college degree or above, and CET-4 or above required; Aoji is recruiting Wayfair/Temu operations, with a salary of 6-7K, a bachelor's degree or above, and CET-4 or CET-6 or above required. Zongwei Cube is recruiting Walmart/Temu/Meikeduo operations, with a salary of 8-13K, 13 days of salary, and a bachelor's degree or above, and more than 2 years of Walmart/Temu/Meikeduo operations experience required.
A well-known e-commerce listed company is recruiting the head of Temu business unit with a salary of 30-50K. The candidate must have one year of experience in the operation of Pinduoduo (Temu) cross-border e-commerce platform. The candidate can be good at operations or products, have experience in leading a team from 0 to 1, and will be given priority with monthly sales of US$800,000 or experience in leading companies in the e-commerce industry.
3. SHEIN's operational needs increase
In overseas markets such as Europe and the United States, SHEIN has a very strong brand effect and high penetration rate. Therefore, after it opened its third-party platform model and hosting model, a large number of cross-border sellers poured in, driving the market demand for SHEIN operators.
This year, the salary package for SHEIN operations has increased by about 20% compared to last year. The top ten regions with the highest recruitment volume are Shenzhen, Jinhua, Guangzhou, Shantou, Ningbo, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan, and Dongguan, of which Shenzhen accounts for 22%, Jinhua and Guangzhou each account for 13%.
A company in Shenzhen is recruiting SHEIN operations, with a salary of 6-10K, 13 salaries. The position is required to be familiar with the operations of Amazon, SHEIN and other platforms, and be able to operate accounts independently. The job requirements are a college degree or above, more than 1 year of cross-border operations experience, experience in operating platforms such as SHEIN, and familiarity with the platform's rules and skills.
4. ChatGPT's recruitment enthusiasm has declined
Among the hot positions in cross-border companies, ChatGPT-related positions were once very popular. Last year, Yibai Network released four ChatGPT-related technical positions at once, including ChatGPT optimizer with a salary of 15-30k; NLP manager (ChatGPT) with a salary of 35-55k; NLP project manager (ChatGPT direction) with a salary of 90-120k, 15 salary; NLP product expert (ChatGPT) with a salary of 60-90k, which can be said to be a huge investment.
At the same time, many big sellers use ChatGPT to improve their business, such as Huakai Yibai and Jihong Shares. Zhiou has connected to ChatGPT and Midjourney, and deeply applied ChatGPT and other AIGC to various fields such as customer service, copywriting, visual content generation, VOC insights, product development, process automation, daily office, and software development .
However, the recruitment boom for ChatGPT-related positions in the industry has subsided. On the BOSS direct recruitment platform commonly used by sellers, there are very few recruitments for this position .
A Shenzhen company is recruiting ChatGPT optimizers with a monthly salary of 6-9K. They are required to work with the Amazon operation team to formulate and optimize ChatGPT operation instructions, including but not limited to Amazon Listing copywriting optimization, advertising keyword optimization, AI image processing, AI product selection analysis, etc. to enable operations. There are also companies recruiting ChatGPT Amazon application specialists for 10-15K, requiring a bachelor's degree or above and 3-8 years of work experience. The threshold is not low.
Sellers no longer recruit a lot of people to develop ChatGPT applications. Firstly, the job salary is high and the cost of independent research is high. Secondly, many ERP tools in the industry have been connected to tools such as ChatGPT, which support sellers to use AI to generate product descriptions, summarize comments, generate product pictures, etc., so sellers no longer have to work hard.
Amazon also provides convenient services for sellers. Last year, Amazon launched a new listing function on the US site using generative AI. Sellers only need to enter simple text to generate the title, product introduction, and five-point description of the listing. Recently, this function has been upgraded. In addition to text, sellers can also generate listings through pictures or URL links, which greatly improves efficiency.
The cross-border e-commerce industry is developing rapidly. Taking Shenzhen, the leader, as an example, in 2023, Shenzhen's cross-border e-commerce imports and exports increased by 75.2%, and the total amount exceeded 300 billion yuan, setting a new record. The number of local cross-border e-commerce export companies exceeds 150,000, accounting for almost half of Chinese sellers on major international e-commerce platforms, and one-third of Amazon China sellers are from Shenzhen.
The rapid growth of the industry has created a large talent gap. Whether it is Amazon operations, product development, or new platform positions such as TikTok operations and Temu operations, the demand is continuing to rise, and practitioners have a large range of career choices. |
