Recently, the US Consumer Protection Commission ( CPSC) issued a danger warning on two magnetic ball toy sets sold on the Temu platform. In the warning notice, the CPSC stated that consumers should immediately stop using these two products because they are composed of multiple loose small magnetic balls, which may cause serious injury or even death to children if swallowed by mistake.
1. Sunny House 125-Piece 5mm Mixed Color Magnetic Ball Toy Set
According to the notice, the product consists of 125 colorful small magnetic spheres with strong magnetic flux. They can be combined into a cube or separated individually and sold in a transparent and portable plastic box.
The products were sold by Chinese seller Sunny House on the Temu platform between April and May 2023, with prices ranging from US$8 to US$19. 2. Ming Tai Trade 216 5mm Magnetic Ball Set
This product consists of 216 colorful 5mm magnetic balls, which are loose and small in size, but have strong magnetic flux. They are combined into a cube by magnetic attraction, and can also be separated and sold in a transparent and portable plastic box.
The goods were sold by Chinese seller Ming Tai Trade on the Temu platform in May 2023 for between US$10 and US$25. The CPSC said that after testing, these magnetic ball sets do not meet the requirements of federal toy regulations because they contain one or more magnets. According to the definition of small cylindrical parts by the US CPSC, the regulations will have higher requirements for magnetic parts. When parts with strong magnets are accidentally ingested by children and retained in the digestive system, they may cause intestinal perforation, twisting, blockage, infection, blood poisoning and death.
According to CPSC statistics, between 2017 and 2021, 2,400 cases of accidental ingestion of magnets were reported to emergency departments in U.S. hospitals. CPSC is aware of seven deaths, two of which occurred outside the United States.
The CPSC has issued violation notices to two sellers, Sunny House and Ming Tai Trade. Currently, neither seller has agreed to recall the products or provide consumers with remedies such as refunds. Temu CPSC commodity |
