According to the latest reports from foreign media, Amazon has been sued again in Europe.
Recently, the Dutch consumer rights organization Stichting Data Bescherming Nederland ( SDBN ) filed a class action lawsuit against Amazon on behalf of 5 million Amazon users living in the Netherlands, accusing the tech giant of violating user data privacy and violating EU privacy laws.
The lawsuit is based on the new version of the European Union's "Data Act" reached in June this year, which gives consumer groups a more accurate basis for class action lawsuits against companies. Currently, SDBN is seeking compensation for all users and asking the court to order Amazon to stop tracking data. The lawsuit mentioned that without the user's permission, Amazon collected users' personal data through cookies and tracked users' online activities on different websites and platforms. After collecting this information, Amazon used the collected information to publish targeted advertisements.
SDBN not only asks Amazon to stop collecting data and using it to track users' online behavior, but also hopes to put pressure on Amazon to realize the consequences of its practices and make necessary changes.
The prosecution bears similarities to a regulatory violation Amazon suffered earlier this year when Luxembourg fined it $887 million for using personal data for advertising . Amazon is appealing that penalty.
SDBN Chairman Anouk Ruhaak stressed that the lawsuit is aimed at obtaining compensation for consumers because Amazon did not adequately address the violations pointed out by the Luxembourg privacy regulator two years ago.
It is reported that the EU's fine for data privacy issues is generally 4% of the global revenue of the fined company or 20 million euros (about 21 million US dollars), and the specific fine amount shall prevail. Amazon Netherlands Data misuse |
