Amazon is going all out this year with salary hikes and hiring more people

According to the latest report from foreign media, Amazon is planning to increase the wages of its operations staff in the UK and add 15,000 new employees before the holidays .

It can be seen that the e-commerce giant is preparing for a wave of peak demand before Christmas.

The company said on Monday it would increase the basic pay of front-line operations staff - who pick, pack, store and transport goods in warehouses - to between £11.80 and £12.50 an hour, depending on location.

The pay increase includes part-time, temporary and full-time workers and is expected to take effect on October 15.

Amazon said it would increase workers' wages further by April 2024, to between £12.30 and £13 an hour, depending on their region.

At the same time, Amazon also said it would hire more than 15,000 additional short-term workers in its logistics warehouses across the UK .

Amazon said the move would represent an investment of £170 million, adding that it would mean a 20% increase in the minimum starting salary for its UK staff over two years.

John Bumfrey, Amazon's UK country manager, said: "We have a group of the most talented colleagues and we're proud to offer them competitive wages and benefits, as well as fantastic career development opportunities."

However, in response to the move on Monday , the GMB union said the pay increase would provide little "comfort" to Amazon workers facing poverty, unsafe working conditions and workplace surveillance.

"Amazon has spent millions fighting its own workers for union rights and fair pay," GMB organiser Rachel Fagan said in a statement.

It can be seen that although the relationship between the two sides is relatively tense, Amazon is still trying to appease the workers in its core warehouse business because they will determine whether this year's holiday season can proceed normally.
