According to the Wall Street Journal, TikTok will soon launch an e-commerce platform in the United States , allowing millions of American users to shop while watching short videos .

 

Industry insiders said that this new shopping experience is a direct competition between TikTok and Temu in the United States . Currently, Temu is a newcomer in the e-commerce industry and has performed very well. With its ultra-low prices, it can even snatch traffic from Amazon.

 

According to anonymous sources interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, TikTok plans to launch this feature in the United States as early as early August, but a TikTok spokesperson declined to comment .



This time around, TikTok reportedly plans to store, sell, and ship a variety of products itself, rather than just providing a platform for third-party sellers to hawk their wares.

 

The Wall Street Journal reported that TikTok will sell a variety of categories including clothing, electronics and kitchen supplies on behalf of many Chinese factories and other partners .

 

With the social media industry struggling due to increasing privacy restrictions and a weak economy, more and more social media platforms are trying to find a second growth curve by turning themselves into online stores .

 

There have been many failed social media-turned-shopping platforms in the U.S. , but in Asia and other parts of the world, people seem to be enjoying shopping on social media.

 

In China, social media apps have become a $423 billion market for livestreaming retail shopping , a model Amazon is trying to replicate, while YouTube just launched its own video shopping channel in South Korea.

 

In the future, TikTok's new e-commerce model may enter a whole new field. Although Temu currently makes a lot of money selling low-cost products to American consumers, it is also facing increasing scrutiny.

 

If TikTok can find a new e-commerce model, it may break the existing market structure and become the leader in the new track.
