20,000 people's petition is useless! Amazon workers have to go back to the office

Starting this week, Amazon employees will be required to work in the office at least three days a week. For this news, Seattle's business and political circles are excited, hoping that these "returning home" workers can bring some vitality to the deserted commercial streets.

But it’s clear that Amazon employees are reluctant to return to the office. After all, who wants to spend hours commuting every day if they can work remotely?

On Monday, Seattle's South Lake Union district was a little quiet, with a few Amazon employees wandering around the campus, wearing work badges around their necks and holding takeout. Nearby, some people in red T-shirts were handing out flyers with the words "Welcome Back, Amazon!"

In October 2020, Amazon set June 2021 as the date for returning to office work , but due to the epidemic and employee opposition , the deadline was postponed three times.

In February this year , Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that the company has decided that employees should work in the office most of the time. This news immediately caused strong dissatisfaction among employees.

More than 22,000 employees have signed a petition opposing returning to the office, stating that employees plan to live a life where their employer will not force them to return to the office.

Additionally, the petition notes that a 2022 internal survey showed that 56 % of employees said they preferred to work remotely and only have one in-person meeting per month.

One Amazon employee said his team members believe that working in the office is not necessarily more efficient than working remotely.

"I think there is no standard for how to define productivity, so asking employees to return to the office on the grounds of productivity is obviously a bit unreasonable."

Despite employees' complaints, the deadline to return to the office has arrived unexpectedly, and the flow of people in the park is gradually increasing. The owner of a nearby chain restaurant said that Wednesday is usually the busiest day, Tuesday and Thursday are average, and Monday, Friday and weekends have the least people.

"Although the flow of people cannot be compared with that before the epidemic, I am already very satisfied. As long as I can survive, it's enough," the restaurant owner added.

In recent times, major technology giants in the United States have been asking their employees to return to the office to work. After three years of remote work, I wonder how long it will take for American workers to adapt to office life again.
