Recently, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced an urgent recall of a certain brand of electric bicycles sold on major platforms due to concerns that lithium-ion batteries may explode and burn consumers. The CPSC said the recall amounted to 22,000 units.
Since June 2016, this model of bicycle has been sold on major platforms, including Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Sears, Wish, Rakuten, AliExpress, Ansell and Newegg. Data shows that the price of these electric bicycles ranges from US$280 to US$930.
The manufacturer said it was voluntarily recalling these bicycles with safety issues because it has received six reports of fire, explosion or spark incidents, including four reports of burns, so far. The brand called on consumers to immediately stop riding this model of electric bicycles to ensure their own safety.
The affected model can only be identified on the product's packaging , not on the bike itself, the retailer said. The bikes appear to be black with 26-inch wheels, the manufacturer said . The battery, shaped like a water bottle, is attached to the bike's downtube, which is printed with the brand name.
The brand advises consumers to remove the batteries from their bikes and dispose of them at an appropriate waste recycling facility , or they can get a free and safe battery replacement by sending them a certificate of correct disposal via the mail .
In recent years, healthy and environmentally friendly travel methods have been deeply rooted in people's hearts. As the only choice for environmentally friendly travel, electric bicycles have always been favored by consumers. In addition, low prices and convenient riding are also the main factors that people regard it as an important means of transportation, so the market share of electric bicycles continues to expand.
But with the rapid growth in the number of electric bicycles, safety issues are emerging.
The CPSC said there were 77,200 injuries and 48 deaths related to electric bikes, scooters and hoverboards in 2021. Most of those accidents were caused by "user control" issues and collisions with motor vehicles, but the third leading cause was fires from lithium-ion batteries.
For consumers, safety is the bottom line no matter what kind of riding tool they use. Therefore, businesses must strictly abide by industry standards, improve product quality, and try to eliminate potential safety hazards of their products. Lithium battery Amazon CPSC |
