Amazon's global market share may surpass eBay

Ten years ago, Amazon only had a higher market share than eBay in the United States . But since then, Amazon has continued to expand and its market share has surpassed eBay globally . Australia is the last major market that eBay has not yet lost .

Amazon’s dominance in e-commerce appears to remain unchallenged in most core markets, but things were n’t always so rosy earlier . In fact , it wasn’t until 2008 that Amazon surpassed eBay in market value , and in many countries it took Amazon years to surpass eBay in market share .

The colors in the graph represent the more popular search terms on Google during the year - the red areas are where Amazon searches were more frequent , while the blue countries are where eBay searches were more frequent.

While this is a rough estimate of consumer preference , it is roughly in line with the growth trends of both platforms . The 20 years of data show that even regions that are not actively deployed in either region eventually follow the general global trend and favor Amazon ( there were many searches for Amazon in the early days , rather than the Amazon shopping platform ).

Australia is the last country where Amazon's market share lags behind eBay . It is also the point on the map that has remained blue the longest in 20 years , witnessing eBay's tenacious struggle .

Amazon first launched in Australia in 2017 and by the end of this year it is expected to have more website visits than eBay and is expected to overtake eBay in market share - which already stands at 90 per cent.

The map becomes even more colorful if we factor in emerging platforms like Shein, Shopee , Meesho, Flipkart, Lazada, etc. In countries like Poland, Chile and Brazil, fast fashion brand Shein is already more popular than Amazon or eBay .

Amazon ’s dominance in this map simply means that it’s more popular than eBay — in many countries, it’s not the most popular shopping platform .

Although Amazon has completely defeated eBay, it is now facing more severe challenges with the rise of various emerging e-commerce platforms.
