Recently, E-Shopper Barometer released a survey report on online shopping in Brazil in 2021. Among Brazilian Internet users, online shoppers accounted for 63%.
The survey shows that due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more Brazilian consumers choose to shop online. During the pandemic, the number of Brazilian online shoppers increased by 17%, with an average of 16 purchases per year. Compared with the data in 2019, the growth rate reached 128%. The reason for the breakthrough growth is that the shopping habits of Brazilian consumers have completely changed. Before the pandemic, Brazilians preferred to shop in offline physical stores.
There are two main types of consumers in Brazilian online shopping: regular online shoppers, who account for 15% of the total , and millennial consumers, who account for 54%.
Among them, regular online shopping consumers accounted for 51% of all online sales . They placed an average of 6.5 orders last month, an increase from 2.3 in the previous survey.
It is worth mentioning that this consumer group is mainly composed of women, accounting for 70%, with an average age of 36.8 years old, and 93% of them live in urban areas.
Millennials are also the main group of online shoppers in Brazil, accounting for 58% of purchases and placing 3-4 orders per month on average. The number of orders is also on the rise compared to the previous period. The categories purchased by millennial consumers are mainly beauty and health products, pharmaceuticals, grocery products, and fresh food and beverages. This consumer group accounts for 63% of women , with an average age of 27.8 years old, and 87% of them live in urban areas.
Sellers can plan and select products based on the preferences of millennial consumers and seize the opportunity of this potential consumer group.
The survey also found that the percentage of consumers who shopped via smartphone increased from 77% to 86%.
In terms of the choice of delivery location, 86% of Brazilian consumers choose home delivery, followed by delivery to the workplace, accounting for 12%.
Surveys and research show that since January 2021, the most popular category sold online in Brazil is fashion products, accounting for 38%, followed by beauty and health products, accounting for 35%, and footwear products ranked third.
According to the latest data released by Nuvemshop, fashion products were the category with the highest revenue in Brazilian e-commerce in the first quarter of this year, with total sales of 213.8 million reais.
Cross-border sellers can seize the current market trends and focus on fashion products.
