Data statistics company Statista surveyed more than 7,000 consumers aged 18-64 across the United States and identified the most popular product categories in the U.S. e-commerce market in 2021.
According to the survey, the most popular categories purchased online by American consumers in 2021 are clothing and shoes, with 54% and 43% of consumers having purchased them respectively. It is understood that the most important feature for consumers when shopping for clothing online is free delivery; one of the reasons for buying shoes online is that online stores have more inventory than physical stores, which gives them more choices. In addition, many consumers also find that the price of online shoes is lower than that of physical stores.
In 2021, 31% of consumers purchased electronic products online. According to the 2021 Consumer Electronics E-Commerce Global Market Report, online sales of electronic products are expected to grow significantly: they are expected to reach US$511.06 billion in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 10%. In the United States, the top three e-commerce platforms with the highest sales of electronic products are Amazon, Best Buy and Apple.
29% of consumers purchase cosmetics and personal care products . In 2020, e-commerce revenue for personal care products in the United States was $32 billion, accounting for about 7.4% of total online retail revenue. One of the main advantages of buying cosmetics and personal care products online is the ability to compare many different brands at the same time. Online retailers can generally offer a wider variety of products than physical stores.
23 % of respondents said they have purchased pet products. The main reasons why pet owners choose to buy online are home delivery and lower prices. Amazon and Chewy are the most popular online retailers of pet products in the United States.
21% of consumers purchase bags and accessories . Nordstrom , Neiman Marcus Group and Macy's have the largest market share in the bag sector. It is expected that by 2024, the number of consumers who purchase bags and accessories worldwide will increase to 24.2%.
18% of respondents purchased home appliances online . According to the survey, 26% of consumers are now more willing to buy appliances online compared to before the epidemic. 31% of major home appliances and 49% of small appliances are sold online worldwide. Compared with direct offline purchases, online purchases of appliances can provide customer reviews and comparisons of different products. USA consumer E-commerce |
