Newegg updates return policy, unpacked products can be returned without reason

According to foreign media reports, Newegg recently revised its return policy: for motherboards and CPUs sold on the platform, consumers can apply for no-reason returns after opening.

The incident started when a YouTube blogger bought a Gigabyte motherboard from Newegg. However, after the product arrived, the blogger felt that he no longer needed it, so he applied for a refund and sent the motherboard back to Newegg. During this process, the buyer did not open the packaging of the product. However, after the product was returned, the platform rejected the buyer's return application on the grounds that the product was damaged.

Later, the blogger uploaded his unboxing video and found that there were several bent pins on the CPU socket, making it unusable. In addition, the blogger also found a Gigabyte Return Material Authorization (RMA) sticker on the motherboard. After calling Gigabyte, the blogger confirmed that Newegg had discovered the problem before and sent the product to Gigabyte for repair at a cost of $100.

But Newegg did not pay for the repairs, so the motherboard with quality problems was sent back to Newegg's warehouse, put back on the shelf, and eventually sold to the blogger. In the video, the blogger said that other buyers who shopped on the Newegg platform also encountered similar problems.

Since the blogger has 1.58 million followers on YouTube, the video caused a huge response after it was released, and the video has been played nearly 2 million times.

This incident brought great pressure to Newegg. Subsequently, Newegg released a statement on its official Twitter account, announcing that it would revise its return policy.

The company claims that "a very small number of returns may not be thoroughly inspected before being sent for return, liquidation, or e-waste recycling and accidentally sold as 'open box' items." As a result, Newegg has changed its internal procedures to improve the way it manages product returns and says it intends to accept all returns of "open box" products on a "no questions asked" basis.

Even so, some media said that the incident dealt a huge blow to Newegg's reputation.
