Hurricane hits! Germany's transportation system suffers serious impact

Recently, according to foreign media reports, strong winds swept across northern Germany. In the early hours of Thursday morning, Storm Ylenia hit northern Germany. The German Meteorological Office (DWD) recorded wind speeds of up to 152 kilometers per hour , causing serious damage to local rail and road commuters and causing power outages . According to police reports , at least two people have died.

Germany's national railway operator Deutsche Bahn has cancelled long-distance train services in Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg, Schleswig -Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Berlin and Brandenburg .

In Lower Saxony, all trains were cancelled due to damage caused by the storm south of Hamburg, and disruptions across the network were expected to last until Saturday, it said.

Trees destroyed by the storm were to blame for the disruptions, with tracks between Bremen and Hamburg and between Dortmund and Münster affected . Both lines have been cleared but the bad weather is still causing delays to trains.

More than 20 flights were also delayed due to the bad weather . The weather office said the storm would affect most northern states such as North Rhine -Westphalia and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Another strong wind is expected to hit northern Germany from Friday to Saturday. The Berlin fire department has declared a state of emergency .

Fire departments across the country were on high alert, with the Berlin fire brigade declaring a state of emergency early Thursday morning .

Some volunteer fire brigades took action in Berlin, authorities warned people not to enter parks or forests in large cities, and zoos in cities such as Berlin, Wuppertal (North Rhine -Westphalia) and Magdeburg (Saxony-Anhalt) will remain closed.

Streets in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany's northernmost state, were flooded with water levels more than 1.5 meters above average. The Elbe River was 1.5 to 2 meters higher than normal. But the highest levels of flooding were expected in the port city of Hamburg due to a storm surge .

In addition to Germany, Poland and the United Kingdom were also affected by the severe weather , with gusts of up to 125 kilometers per hour even damaging more than 500 houses in Poland .

In the UK, a rare "red weather" alert was issued for Thursday and Friday , warning that strong gusts would be "life-threatening" in southwest England and south Wales.
