Amazon opens first distribution center in Belgium

E-commerce giant Amazon is opening its first logistics center in Belgium , with the site scheduled to be completed by the end of this year .

Recently, according to a report in De Standaard in Belgium , Amazon 's first logistics center in Belgium will be located in Antwerp and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022. The new location aims to meet the growing local demand and expand its delivery network capacity.

The distribution center is located in Antwerp's Blue Gate Business Park and will be managed by Amazon itself . It will sort parcels from large distribution centers in France and Germany and then deliver the sorted parcels to Belgian customers.

The distribution center will be put into use by the end of this year and plans to create 50 jobs . More than 200 drivers from local express companies will deliver packages.

Amazon Logistics Europe Director said, “Since Amazon was established in Belgium, we have established trusting relationships with different local express delivery companies in Belgium and will continue to work closely with these partners.

Amazon also mentioned investments in shipping innovations compared to previous delivery methods, such as letting customers know how many times a driver stopped before arriving and being able to use "delivery photos" to ensure packages were delivered correctly.

With its own delivery service, Amazon can put more pressure on existing parcel companies to lower their prices. In the past, Amazon mostly outsourced, but now it is taking as many steps in the supply chain as possible into its own hands. In the eyes of industry insiders, this is not a good thing for Bpost , Amazon's regular express service in Belgium for many years .

European e-commerce as a whole has developed significantly. In addition to the large markets of the UK, Germany and France, the e-commerce markets in other small countries are also rising rapidly. Amazon is also continuously increasing its investment and expansion in Europe.

Last summer, Amazon opened their first logistics center in the Netherlands . In addition, Amazon previously announced plans to build eight new distribution centers in Germany in the first half of 2022.

Compared with several large European countries, the Belgian market is relatively small, but it also has great potential.
