Nearly 4,000 children's pajamas were urgently recalled and were sold on Amazon

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ( CPSC ) website shows that a batch of children's pajamas made in China were urgently recalled recently because they did not meet the federal flammability standards for children's pajamas and posed a risk of burns. From October 2017 to June 2021, about 3,900 pieces of problematic pajamas were sold on Amazon.

The core purpose of flammability regulations is to protect children from the risk of burns. These regulations require that children's and infant sleepwear be flame resistant and self-extinguishing when exposed to flames from small objects such as candles, lighters or matches .

The main reason for the failure of flame-retardant textiles is that some companies do not understand the relevant standards. Some companies have been notified many times for their products due to lax control of raw material procurement, product design defects, and lack of flame-retardant performance testing and control measures.

Substandard products are flammable and very dangerous. For the safety of children, countries around the world have corresponding requirements for the flammability of children's clothing.

For example, in the United States, children's pajamas exported to the United States have higher flammability testing requirements than ordinary textiles and must meet the requirements of 16CFR1615 and 1616.

Flammability testing involves selecting and testing a specified number of samples of three different items (fabric, prototype seams and trim, and production garment seams). Based on the test results, items may be accepted, rejected, or require additional sampling and testing.

In terms of labeling, each item of children's sleepwear must have a permanent label that explains how to care for the garment; a permanent label with the unit identification (words, letters, dates, or a combination thereof) so that the manufacturer can trace the relevant fabric and garment batches in the event of a product recall.

Children's clothing is in great demand, and foreign regulatory agencies are very strict in their review. Once a safety hazard is discovered, the relevant products will be recalled and removed from the shelves immediately. In serious cases, the relevant sellers will also be held accountable.

In addition, the seller will lose the trust of consumers. For the relevant brands, this is a serious public relations crisis, which will affect the seller's brand image and future sales.

Therefore, in order to avoid such "recall" incidents, product quality needs to be effectively controlled.
